EUGENE, Ore. – Stewart Togher, throws coach for the University of Oregon track and field teams for 15 years, passed away at the age of 80 on Wednesday night after a long battle with leukemia.
Togher, a former Scottish weightlifting champion, came to the U.S. in the early 1980s to be a part of the Olympic development program with American hammer throwers.
Widely considered one of the world's foremost authorities on the hammer throw, Togher was the Ducks' throws coach from 1983 to 1997 and was also the U.S. national hammer throw coach for 10 years.
Only four U.S. hammer throwers have ever exceeded the 80-meter mark, and three of them were coached at some point by Togher – Lance Deal, Jud Logan and former Duck Ken Flax.
Deal, the U.S. record-holder in the hammer throw, former UO coach and current director of track and field venues and program support at Oregon, told The Register-Guard in 2010 that Togher was "the best hammer coach in the world, bar none."
