Kleist Leads Ducks Past Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 5 ranked Oregon softball team belted two homers to back a fantastic start by Megan Kleist in a 4-1 win over rival Oregon State on Thursday to open the three-game Civil War series.
The Ducks (26-5, 3-1 Pac-12) defeated the Beavers for the 16th straight time after sweeping OSU the previous five seasons.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Kleist was dominant early, recording five strikeouts over two scoreless innings to start the game.
The Ducks broke open the scoreless tie in the third when senior Lauren Lindvall mashed a solo home run to right centerfield, her third big fly of the season. Sophomore Haley Cruse followed with a double off the wall and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Shannon Rhodes.
With a 2-0 lead, Kleist continued to deal. The junior struck out the side in the third inning and picked up another strikeout in the fourth.
Oregon added two more runs in the fifth inning when Rhodes smashed a two-out, two-run home run to left centerfield. The sophomore has homered in back-to-back games after also hitting a three-run walkoff to end the series against then-No. 3 UCLA.
Oregon State got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run that was nearly caught at the wall in right.
But that proved to be the only blemish on Kleist's day, as the right-hander got a strikeout looking to end the game in the seventh.
IN THE CIRCLE: Kleist racked up 13 strikeouts in the win, her third-highest total of the season and the sixth time this year she's reached double-digit punch out. The junior now has a pristine 0.91 ERA on the season with 112 strikeouts and just nine walks. Her 12.4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio is the best in the Pac-12.
AT THE PLATE: In addition to the home runs by Rhodes and Lindvall, the Ducks tallied five hits total. Haley Cruse went 2-for-2 with two doubles and the sophomore is now fourth on the team, hitting .340 this year. Cruse has a hit in eight of the last nine games and has had two hits four times in that stretch. Rhodes has 11 RBIs over the Ducks' last six games.
UP NEXT: The Ducks continue the Civil War series on Friday at 3 PM. Pac-12 Networks will air the game live on Pac-12 National and Pac-12 Oregon.
