Ducks Drop Heartbreaker at OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gwen Svekis tied the game up with a solo homer in the top of the seventh but Oregon State used a walkoff single to snap the Ducks' 16-game Civil War winning streak, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in Corvallis.
The Ducks (26-6, 3-2 Pac-12) rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game up in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough to escape with a win.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks had chances to score early but couldn't drive in runs. Oregon had its leadoff batter on base in each of the first four innings and left the bases loaded in the third and the fourth but weren't able to score.
The Beavers broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on four hits and one UO error.
Oregon answered back quickly, however, with two runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman Mary Iakopo laced a two-out solo home run off the OSU scoreboard in left for the Ducks' first run. Then, after sophomore Haley Cruse doubled for the third time in the series, sophomore Mia Camuso drove Cruse in with a double of her own.
Down a run entering the seventh, the Ducks needed some magic and got it in the form of Svekis' team-leading ninth home run of the season, a shot to left center.
The Ducks appeared to have the momentum back going into the bottom of the seventh. But with a runner at second, OSU singled to center to plate the game-winning run.
THE STREAK: Oregon had won 16-straight Civil War matchups. The last time the Ducks had lost to OSU was on March 26, 2012. Oregon lost the series that year as well, 2-1, and will look to avoid that result with the final game of this year's series at 3 PM on Saturday. The Ducks still haven't lost to OSU in Eugene since April 11, 2009.
ELISH SUFFERS FIRST LOSS: Miranda Elish took the loss on Friday, the first loss in her stellar collegiate career. The sophomore entered Friday's game at OSU with a perfect 23-0 record before falling on a walkoff single. Elish (11-1) had pitched a complete game in her previous 10 starts but was pulled in the fourth before re-entering in the fifth. Elish went 5.2 innings with four runs allowed (three earned) on six hits, one walk and six strikeouts.
AT THE PLATE: The Ducks tallied eight hits on Friday but left nine runners on base. Cruse had two hits for the second straight day and Camuso also had two hits.
UP NEXT: The Ducks will look to win a sixth straight Civil War series in the rubber match at 3 PM on Saturday. Pac-12 Networks will broadcast the game on Pac-12 Oregon.
