Ducks Fall 4-0 in Final Game of Series at ASU
04/15/18 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 3 ranked Oregon softball team (34-7, 9-3 Pac-12) struggled in the circle and couldn't get their bats going and fell to the No. 7 Arizona State (34-7, 8-5), 4-0, on Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Ducks took the series from the Sun Devils in Tempe, winning the first two games.
How it Happened: The Ducks were set down in order in the first inning by Arizona State's ace Giselle Juarez, and the Sun Devils got on the board first with a double and an RBI single despite Megan Kleist recording two strikeouts. The first inning run allowed was just the second surrendered by the Ducks in the first inning all season. Tennessee also scored in the first inning and the Ducks lost, 1-0, in that game.
Mary Iakopo singled to third base in the second, but the Ducks again went down on a pop out and a pair of strikeouts. Kleist set the Sun Devils down in order in the second, but Juarez kept the Ducks hitless through the fifth inning.
Maggie Balint came to the circle to pitch in the bottom of the third, but a home run from Jade Gortarez put Arizona State ahead 2-0. Balint struck out the first batter she faced in the fourth, but after allowing a double and a walk, Miranda Elish came out of the bullpen to replace her. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases and forced in a run but then Elish ended the inning with a strikeout.
The Sun Devils scored their fourth and final run in the fifth inning on a triple and a single. Jenna Lilley singled in the sixth, and DJ Sanders in the seventh, but the Ducks were unable to produce a run in either inning and fell 4-0 in the series finale.
Up Next: The Ducks return to the Jane on Thursday afternoon to face No. 2 Oklahoma for the Coach White Out Game. First pitch is at 4 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks. The Ducks then host Stanford for senior weekend in a three-game series starting Friday.
