EUGENE, Ore. - Senior DJ Sanders went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and the No. 4 ranked Oregon softball team defeated Stanford, 8-4, on Friday night to open a three-game series at Jane Sanders Stadium. Oregon has beaten Stanford 17 straight times dating back to 2012.
The Ducks (36-7, 10-3 Pac-12) are now tied with No. 1 Washington and No. 3 UCLA in the loss column of the Pac-12 standings as the Bruins' win over the Huskies today gives all three teams three conference losses.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After a scoreless first inning, the Ducks blew the game open with a six-run second inning. The Ducks belted out five singles and a double. The big knock was a bases-clearing double off the wall in left by Sanders. Mia Camuso had a two-run single and Haley Cruse had a one-run single in the inning as well.
Stanford cut into Oregon's lead with a pair of runs in the third coming on a walk, RBI single and a throwing error.
The Ducks added single runs in the third and fourth innings. Jenna Lilley smashed a RBI double to left center and Lauren Lindvall hit a RBI infield single.
Facing an 8-2 deficit, Stanford didn't fold. The Cardinal used back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth to make it an 8-4 lead for Oregon but that would be as close as it got. Pitcher Miranda Elish got four of the last five outs five strikeout to end the game.
AT THE PLATE: After driving in three runs on Thursday in a 5-0 win against Oklahoma, Sanders did it again with three more RBIs on Friday against Stanford. All three came on her bases-clearing double in the second. Sanders also singled in the first and doubled in the fifth. Alexis Mack, Lilley and Mary Iakopo each had a pair of hits. After getting a single in UO's big second inning, Camuso has six hits over her last three games.
HIT PARADE: Oregon's 15 hits on Friday against the Cardinal are tied for the most by the Ducks in a game this season. Oregon also had 15 hits against Missouri on Feb. 10 at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic. Oregon has had double-digit hits 20 times this season.
IN THE CIRCLE: Miranda Elish improved to 15-1 this season after tossing a complete game. The sophomore allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in seven innings with 12 strikeouts and two walks. Elish has struck out double digits batters eight times this year. Elish owns a 0.99 ERA in 106.1 innings this season with 163 strikeouts and just 21 walks.
UP NEXT: The Ducks meet Stanford for game two of the series at 5 PM on Saturday. It will be alumni day at The Jane, with former players being honored prior to first pitch.
