04/21/18 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. - Freshman Mary Iakopo went 3-for-3 and the No. 4 ranked Oregon softball team clinched the series with Stanford after a 4-1 win on Saturday. The Ducks will go for the sweep at noon on Sunday.
Oregon (37-7, 11-3 Pac-12) scored four runs on 10 hits against the Cardinal. The Ducks have tallied double digit hits in three straight games and four of the last five. Oregon has defeated Stanford in 18 straight meetings.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Stanford scored first as the Ducks allowed an unearned run to cross the plate on a throwing error after the Cardinal singled twice.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Jenna Lilley mashed her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to right, to lead off the bottom of the first.
With the game tied up, 1-1, the Ducks took the lead on a Gwen Svekis RBI single in the third. Alexis Mack had reached earlier in the frame on a Stanford error and moved to second on a ground out. Svekis knocked a two-out single up the middle to score Mack from second.
Oregon add another run in the fourth when freshman Lauren Burke tripled to right to score Haley Cruse from second. Cruse singled to leadoff the inning and stole second.
The Ducks tallied a second two-out run in the fifth when Mia Camuso doubled to left center, allowing Iakopo to score all the way from first.
AT THE PLATE: Iakopo, who is hitting a team-best .439 in Pac-12 play this season, went 3-for-3 to lead the Ducks against Stanford. The freshman singled in the second, doubled in the third and singled again in the fifth. Cruse and Burke each had two hits as well.
IN THE CIRCLE: Junior Megan Kleist tossed a complete game, allowing just one unearned run on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Kleist now owns a 15-5 record with a 0.77 ERA this season. She has 160 strikeouts compared to just 12 walks.
UP NEXT: The Ducks go for the sweep of Stanford at noon tomorrow. Oregon has swept a Pac-12 series 28 times under head coach Mike White.
