EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 4 ranked Oregon softball team defeated Stanford, 4-1, on Sunday at Jane Sanders Stadium to sweep the three-game series with the Cardinal.
Oregon (38-7, 12-3 Pac-12) has defeated Stanford in 19 straight games going back to the 2012 season. The Ducks have swept the Cardinal six straight years.
The sweep sets up a big Pac-12 series next week in Seattle as the No. 4 ranked Ducks meet the No. 1 ranked Huskies starting Friday. The games on Saturday and Sunday will both be on ESPN2.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon opened up the scoring in the first inning when Gwen Svekis lined a one-out single to left to score Jenna Lilley, who drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on back-to-back sacrifice bunts.
The scored remained 1-0 until Stanford tied it up in the fourth on a solo homer to right center.
The tie was short-lived, as the Ducks struck for three more two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mary Iakopo drew a one-out walk and Cherish Burks entered to pinch run for her and immediately stole second. After a flyout, Haley Cruse lined a RBI single to right to score Burks from second. Cruse then swiped second but she would have scored just as easily from first as Shannon Rhodes launched a pinch-hit two-run homer to left to give the Ducks a 4-1 lead.
Starting pitcher Miranda Elish sat the Cardinal down in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to earn the win.
IN THE CIRCLE: Elish (16-1) tossed a complete game with just one run allowed on two hits. The sophomore struck out 10 batters and issued just one walk. Elish has struck out double digit batters nine times this season and four times in Pac-12 play. She has 173 strikeouts on the season compared to just 22 walks.
AT THE PLATE: After tallying 25 hits in the first two games of the series, the Ducks managed six hits in the finale on Sunday. Svekis went 2-for-3 with a RBI single in the first and a double in the sixth. Rhodes, Lilley, Mia Camuso and Cruse all had one hit each.
UP NEXT: The Ducks head to No. 1 ranked Washington this week for a three-game series starting on Friday. There are just three weekends left in the regular season, as the Ducks host Utah and visit Cal after meeting UW.
