Southerland Runs Big PR in Corvallis

NCAA Indoor 800-meter champion Sabrina Southerland ran a big PR to win the 1,500 meter invite on Friday in Corvallis
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Redshirt senior and 800-meter NCAA Indoor champion Sabrina Southerland ran a big career-best to win the 1,500 meters on Friday as the Oregon track and field teams kicked off the OSU High Performance Meet at the Whyte Track and Field Center.
Oregon will have student-athletes competing in Corvallis once again on Saturday, while the majority of the Ducks' sprinters will be in action at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
How it Happened: Southerland, who is currently second in the NCAA in the 800, ran 4:16.82 to win the invite section of the women's 1,500 meters. Southerland's time was almost a five-second improvement over her previous PR of 4:21.51, and a season-best of nearly 18 seconds. Junior Susan Ejore was 11th overall in 4:25.19.

Sophomore Maddie Rabing took third in the women's hammer throw, finishing with a top throw of 181 feet, eight inches (55.47 meters). Freshman Sydnee Walker (below) performed well with a collegiate PR of 170-9 (52.04m), an improvement of more than seven feet from her previous season-best. Sophomore Kiana Phelps threw 161-0 (49.09m) to place second overall in the women's discus.

Sophomore Max Lydum led a trio of Ducks in the men's hammer, finishing third overall with a toss of 190-2 (57.98m). Redshirt sophomore Austin Tharp (below) was one spot behind Lydum after reaching a career-best of 183-8 (55.99m). Freshman Jared Briere also reached the finals and placed ninth with a mark of 168-5 (51.33m). Junior Drake Brennan (153-5/46.76m) and sophomore Sebastian Barajas (150-4/45.84m) both made the finals in the men's discus, finishing seventh and ninth, respectively.

Redshirt seniors Alli Cash (16:40.36) and Bryan Fernandez (14:31.44) closed the night with fifth and 10th place finishes, respectively, in the invite sections of the 5,000 meters.
