EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore pitcher Miranda Elish tossed her first career perfect game and the Ducks swept a doubleheader against Portland State on Tuesday night at Jane Sanders Stadium.
Oregon won the first game, 8-2, and was victorious in the second game, 3-0.
Elish threw her perfect game in the second game of the doubleheader. The sophomore used a career-high 16 strikeouts to post the fourth perfect game in Oregon softball history and first-ever seven inning perfect game.
Alicia Cook had what is believed to be the first perfect game in program history on April 28, 2006 in a 9-0 five-inning run-rule win against No. 5 Stanford. Jessica Moore had a perfect game against No. 17 Arizona on April 14, 2013, in a five-inning 9-0 run-rule win. Cheridan Hawkins also had a perfect game in her career, coming on March 27, 2015 against Washington in an 8-0 five-inning run-rule win.
Elish's perfect game is the 30th no-hitter in UO history and the third this season. Megan Kleist had back-to-back no-hitters earlier this year at Florida State and at home against Montana. Elish's perfect game is the first ever at Jane Sanders Stadium.
GAME 1: Oregon 8, Portland State 2
After a scoreless first inning, the Ducks broke through for four runs in the second. With the bases loaded, Alexis Mack came through with a two-run single to right. Another run scored when Gwen Svekis drew a bases loaded walk and the fourth scored a RBI ground out to third.
Oregon added another run in third on a DJ Sanders sacrifice fly to center and the Ducks scored again in the fourth when Haley Cruse rolled a RBI ground out to second to score Cherish Burks from third.
Portland State got on the board with a two-run double in the top of the sixth but the Ducks answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Lauren Burke scored from second on a single by Cruse and a throwing error by the Vikings. Cruse then scored when Elish lined a pinch-hit triple to left.
Maggie Balint earned the win in the first game for the Ducks after allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Balint is now 7-1 on the season. Shannon Rhodes had two hits for the Ducks, as did freshman Shaye Bowden.
GAME 2: Oregon 3, Portland State 0
Elish recorded her first career perfect game and her first career no-hitter in Oregon's 3-0 win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
The game was a pitchers' duel early, with Elish squaring off against Portland State starter Emma Detamore. Neither pitcher allowed a run until the fifth inning, when the Ducks finally broke through offensively.
Mack tallied her second RBI single of the day when she lined a ball up the middle to bring home Burke. Oregon added some insurance runs in the sixth when April Utecht smashed a two-run homer to left center.
Oregon's three runs were more than enough for Elish, who was simply dominant against the Vikings.
Elish, who suffered the first loss of her collegiate career last Friday at Oregon State, rebounded in the biggest way possible.
Elish struck out every PSU starter en route to a career-high 16 punch outs. She started the game with a strikeout in the first and ended it with a strikeout in the seventh. In between, Elish struck out the side in the fifth as part of seven straight outs recorded via strikeout. She also struck out the side in the seventh.
Elish never even let a ball leave the infield. In addition to her 16 strikeouts, Elish induced five ground ball outs. She threw 79 pitches in the game and 62 went for strikes. The sophomore is now 12-1 on the season.
