EUGENE, Ore. - Mary Iakopo and DJ Sanders each homered and the No. 5 ranked Oregon softball team run-ruled No. 9 Arizona, 10-0, in six innings on Sunday to sweep the three-game series with the Wildcats.
The Ducks (32-6, 7-2 Pac-12) outscored Arizona 23-2 in the series with a pair of run-rule victories. In Oregon's last six home games against the Wildcats, Oregon has outscored Arizona 40-2 with three run-rule wins and five shutouts.
BATTLE OF THE MIKES: Oregon head coach Mike White is now 19-8 all-time against Arizona and head coach Mike Candrea. Oregon has swept Arizona three times in White's nine seasons at the helm.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After scoreless first and second innings, the Ducks broke through in the third. Gwen Svekis lifted a sacrifice fly to right to put Oregon ahead 1-0 and freshman Mary Iakopo followed with a two-out RBI single to right to make it a 2-0 lead.
Sanders doubled the Oregon lead with a line drive two-run homer, her ninth of the year, to left in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lead 4-0 going to the sixth inning, Oregon made sure a seventh inning wouldn't be needed.
With the bases loaded and one out, back-to-back wild pitches allowed Sanders and then Jenna Lilley to score, putting the Ducks ahead, 6-0. One batter later, an error allowed Alexis Mack to score from third. Up 7-0 and needing just one more run to run-rule the Wildcats for a second straight game, Iakopo delivered with a three-run homer to right center, her fourth of the season, to end it.
IN THE CIRCLE: Megan Kleist started the game for the Ducks and had the Wildcats on their heels early. The junior struck out the side in the first and picked up three more strikeouts in the second inning. She sat the Wildcats down in order in the third and used a strikeout to get out of jam in the fourth with runners at the corners. After Kleist sat UA down in order in the fifth, Miranda Elish came on in the sixth and picked up three quick outs.
Kleist (12-4) earned the win after tossing five scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, one hit and two walks. Elish pitched a perfect sixth inning in relief.
AT THE PLATE: Iakopo went a team-best 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. The freshman is hitting .316 this season while seeing time at catcher, designated player and first base. Svekis had two more hits in the game and went 6-for-8 in the series with two homers, three doubles and six RBIs.
UP NEXT: Oregon heads to Tempe to take on No. 7 ranked Arizona State in a three-game series starting Friday. The Sun Devils took 2-of-3 games this weekend at Oregon State, including a 2-1 win in 15 innings on Sunday.
