EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon owned a 5-0 lead on Saturday before rain postponed the second game of the Ducks' series to Sunday, where the Ducks finished off the Wildcats with an 8-0 six-inning run-rule win.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks (31-6, 6-2) had a 5-0 lead going to the sixth inning when rain forced the game to be postponed and resumed at 1 PM on Sunday.
Starting pitcher Miranda Elish, who tossed all five innings on Saturday, came out and picked up three strikeouts in the top of the sixth before the Oregon offense delivered three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Jenna Lilley walked and moved to third when Alexis Mack doubled to right center. A Shannon Rhodes grounder to short was misplayed, allowing both Lilley and Mack to score on the error. After a strikeout and pop out, Haley Cruse singled allowing Rhodes to move to third. A wild pitch brought home Rhodes for the game-ending run.
On the previous day, Gwen Svekis singled in a two-out run in the first to put the Ducks up, 1-0. Mary Iakopo followed with another single and an error on the play allowed the second run of the game to score. Freshman Lauren Burke continued the two-out magic with a trip[le to the wall in left center giving Oregon a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Iakopo doubled in a run in the fifth and Lauren Lindvall shot a single through the left side to plate a second run to make it a 5-0 lead. That's when the skies opened up and after a nearly two hour rain delay, the game was postponed to Sunday.
IN THE CIRCLE: Elish was amazing for the Ducks, as she has been all season. The sophomore recorded 13 strikeouts, her sixth double digit strikeout game of the season, in the six-inning shutout with three hits allowed and no walks.
AT THE PLATE: Svekis continues to rake for the Ducks. After going 2-for-2 with a pair of homers in the series opener on Friday, the senior catcher went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and a RBI in the second game of the set. Mack and Iakopo also had two hits each for the Ducks.
