Ducks Bash Bears, 13-0

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 2 ranked Ducks mashed three home runs in the sixth inning and run-ruled No. 24 California, 13-0, on Thursday to open a three-game series against the Golden Bears.
The Ducks (45-7, 19-3 Pac-12) entered the final series of the season tied with No. 1 UCLA for first place in the Pac-12 standings.
After the run-rule win this afternoon, the Ducks will now wait and see the result of tonight's game with the Bruins and No. 6 Arizona State in Los Angeles. A loss by UCLA tonight would mean the Ducks could clinch at least a share of the league title with a win tomorrow in Berkeley. Oregon is looking for its fifth Pac-12 title in the last six seasons.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Oregon took an early lead on sophomore Shannon Rhodes' sac fly in the first inning. Rhodes added two more RBIs in the third with a single to center. Freshman Mary Iakopo followed Rhodes' single with a RBI double to center to make it a 4-0.
The Ducks added another run in the fourth when Jenna Lilley lifted a sac fly to left to bring home Haley Cruse, who led off the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on an error.
Another run came home in the fifth inning to give the Ducks a 6-0 lead. Mia Camuso blooped a single to left center to score Rhodes, who had a one-out double two batters earlier.
The Ducks had a comfortable lead going into the sixth inning when they blew the game wide open with seven runs on eight hits.
After Cruse and Lilley started the sixth inning with singles, Alexis Mack reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and third with one out. DJ Sanders worked a long at-bat and launched a three-run home run to left. After the homer, Gwen Svekis and pinch-hitter Darya Kaboli-Nejad each singled to put two runners on base once again. Pinch-hitter April Utecht crushed a three-run homer to center to make it a 12-0 lead for the Ducks. Oregon was not done scoring however, as Lauren Lindvall gave the Ducks back-to-back jacks with a solo homer to center.
IN THE CIRCLE: Starting pitcher Miranda Elish (19-1) had more than enough run support prior to the big sixth inning. The sophomore tossed a complete game (six innings) shutout with just two hits allowed. Elish recorded three strikeouts and did not issue a single walk.
AT THE PLATE: The heart of the Oregon lineup – Sanders, Svekis and Rhodes – each had two hits, as did No. 9 hitter Cruse. The Ducks saw every batter get a hit, nine different players cross home plate and seven different players tally an RBI. Sanders, Rhodes and Utecht each had three RBIs.
UP NEXT: The Ducks and Golden Bears meet again on Friday at 3 PM on Pac-12 Networks.
