Southerland, Women Of Oregon Highlight Day Two Of NCAA Prelims

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Fueled by strong performances on the opening day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round, Oregon picked up right where it left off by adding eight more qualifiers to its total on Friday at Hornet Stadium.
The women added six qualifiers to bring their two-day total to nine, while four others advanced to Saturday's final round in the 200 meters and 100-meter hurdles. Senior Sabrina Southerland continued her dominance in the 800 by posting the top NCAA time of the year and a new PR at 2:00.72, while the Ducks will send three to Eugene in the 400 meters and two in the 100 meters.
Junior Cravon Gillespie continued his impressive run in the sprints, earning a spot in the NCAA Championship in the 100, while junior Orwin Emilien produced an automatic-qualifying time in the second heat of the 400. The men also advanced a combined four runners to Saturday in the 200 meters and 110-meter hurdles.
FLYING HOME – WOMEN
With five in the quarterfinals of the 400, Oregon quickly doubled its number of NCAA qualifiers. The sophomore duo of Makenzie Dunmore (51.25) and Hannah Waller (51.76) posted the second and third-best times of the day, respectively, while junior Briyahna DeRosiers (52.06) had the top non-auto time to finish sixth. Dunmore won the third heat for her automatic-qualifier, while Waller's 51.76 was a new personal-best. Oregon will be the only program at nationals with three runners in the 400.
For the second straight day, freshman Jasmin Reed set a new PR in the 100 to earn an auto-qualifying spot. Reed's time of 11.23 was good for fifth place, edging out her PR of 11.26 set on Thursday. Junior Ariana Washington became the fifth Duck on the day to advance home to Eugene thanks to her time of 11.30, good for one of the 12 spots.
Southerland was the sixth and final NCAA qualifier of the night and did so in a big way. The reigning NCAA indoor 800-meter and Pac-12 outdoor 800-meter champ entered the weekend with the second-best time nationally this year, but vaulted to the top of the list with her run of 2:00.72.

FLYING HOME – MEN
Junior Orwin Emilien capitalized on his auto-qualifying advancement on Thursday with an auto-qualifying performance in the 400 meters to become the second Duck to book his ticket to Eugene. Emilien's time of 46.34 was good for one of the auto-qualifying spots in the third heat, as he'll make his first NCAA Championship appearance in June.
The Pac-12 champion in the 100 meters, Gillespie was coming off a personal-best run of 10.12 on Thursday and carried that momentum over into Friday. Gillespie finished fourth overall to easily make his first NCAA Championship field with a time of 10.24.

MOVING ON – WOMEN
The Oregon women backed up their six national qualifiers with four more that advanced into Saturday, including three in the 200 meters. The trio of freshman Lauren Rain Williams, Ariana Williams and Jasmin Reed all advanced in the 100 on Thursday and followed by all advancing in the 200 on Friday. Rain Williams won the second heat and claimed an auto-qualifying spot with the third-best time of the day at 22.93. Williams and Reed's runs came after advancing in the 100, as they advanced to Saturday with fifth and ninth place finishes, respectively.
Junior Alaysha Johnson set herself up to advance to her third NCAA Championships by advancing to Saturday's final round in the 100-meter hurdles. The All-American earned an auto-qualifying spot by winning the second heat on Friday with a time of 13.05.

MOVING ON – MEN
The day started strong for the Oregon men, as both sophomore Braxton Canady and freshman Joseph Anderson advanced in the 110-meter hurdles. Canady earned an auto-qualifying by winning the fourth heat with a time of 14.01. Anderson made it a perfect 2-for-2 for the Ducks in the event with a time of 14.23 to earn one of the six non-automatic spots.
Shortly after advancing to nationals in the 100, Gillespie was back at it again in the 200 meters, recording a personal-best time of 20.61 to win the second heat. It marked the second PR in as many days for Gillespie. Running in the sixth and final heat, freshman Rieker Daniel posted a time of 21.10, good for the top non-automatic qualifying time. Gillespie and Daniel will run in the final round of the 200 on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. PT.
