05/26/18 | Track and Field
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After a combined 12 NCAA qualifiers through the first two days of the NCAA West Preliminary, the Oregon men's and women's track teams combined to add another 18 qualifiers to that total on Saturday at Hornet Stadium.
Oregon's total of 30 qualifiers that will make their way to Hayward Field for the NCAA Championships features 19 from the women, who had another dominating day with 10 entries. The Ducks will have multiple entries in four different events at the NCAA Championships on the women's side.
Highlighting the day's 10 entries for the women was the 200-meter trio of Lauren Rain Williams, Jasmin Reed and Ariana Washington, who also teamed with Alaysha Johnson to post the top 4x100-meter relay time of the day at 43.32. Reed and Washington were Oregon's two individual double-entries into NCAAs, as they will also be in the 100-meter field.
The Men of Oregon entered the day with three NCAA entries and bolstered their number to 11 with eight more in seven events on Saturday. Pac-12 1,500-meter champion Sam Prakel earned his first trip to the NCAA Championships with an automatic qualifier spot by winning the day's second heat. Also in the second heat of the 1,500, Mick Stanovsek battled to earn one of the two non-auto qualifying spots to give Oregon two entries in the event.
FLYING HOME – WOMEN
After sending nine qualifiers through to Eugene over the first two days, the Oregon women responded with 10 on the final day.
Junior Chaquinn Cook was the first individual qualifier on the day for the Ducks, as she delivered on her very first attempt in the triple jump with a leap of 43-7 ¾ (13.30m) to book her spot at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year. The Portland native was able to pass on her final two jumps and still earn one of the 12 spots.
Ranked fifth nationally entering the race, the 4x100 meter relay squad of Alaysha Johnson, Lauren Rain Williams, Jasmin Reed and Ariana Washington turned in a dominating performance in the second heat to post the top time in the regional to secure their spot in the NCAA Championships.
That was just the start for the quartet, as Rain Williams, Reed and Washington returned later in the night to qualify in the 200 meters, making Oregon one of three teams with a trio of entries in the race at NCAA Championships. A night after taking down her personal best in the 100, Reed's time of 22.90 was a PR in the 200, good for fifth behind Rain Williams in fourth (22.85).
Even before the trio of Ducks advanced in the 200 meters, Alaysha Johnson was back on the track for the final round of the 100-meter hurdles, less than an hour after the 4x100. Johnson didn't disappoint, winning the third heat for an automatic qualifying spot into her third straight NCAA Championships with a time of 12.96.
The distance crew took over in the later part of day, as sophomore Jessica Hull earned her first trip to the NCAA Championships with a run of 4:13.22 in the 1,500 meters. The Pac-12 champion will enter NCAAs with the third-best time this season.
