EUGENE, Ore. – Junior Megan Kleist tossed a two-hit shutout and the No. 2 ranked Oregon softball team run-ruled Utah, 8-0, in six innings to open a three-game series at The Jane.
The Ducks (42-7, 16-3 Pac-12) remain tied with No. 1 ranked UCLA for first in the Pac-12 standings after the Bruins defeated No. 24 Cal, 5-0, earlier on Friday in Berkeley.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Ducks jumped out to an early lead with Gwen Svekis mashed her team-leading 14th home run of the season in the first inning. Svekis smacked a two-run, two-out bomb to left to put the Ducks up 2-0.
Oregon added three more runs in the second inning. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Haley Cruse singled and both baserunners moved up on a wild pitch. Jenna Lilley walked to load the bases with one out before another wild pitch drove in a run and put the Ducks up 3-0. Lauren Burke followed with a pinch-hit single to right to drive in a pair and Oregon owned a 5-0 lead through two innings.
Neither team scored in the third but Cruse tattooed a solo homer to left center, her first of the season, to put the Ducks up 6-0 in the fourth.
Oregon scored twice in the sixth to end the game via run-rule. Lauren Lindvall started the sixth with a single and stole second base. Cruse then reached on an error which allowed Lindvall to score to make it 7-0. After a flyout, Alexis Mack singled and then a pair of Utah errors on the play allowed Cruse to come all the way home from first for the game-ending run. Utah made four errors in the game.
IN THE CIRCLE: Kleist (18-5) made quick work of the Utes in every frame other than the fourth. Utah started the fourth with back-to-back singles and had runners at second and third with one out. Kleist got out of the jam with a strikeout and a grounder back to the pitcher. Those were the only two hits Utah managed against the right-hander. Kleist tossed a six-inning shutout with five strikeouts and just one walk. The junior lowered her ERA this season to a 0.89.
AT THE PLATE: Burke and Cruse each had a game-high two hits while Burke and Svekis each had two RBIs. The Ducks struck out just twice in the game while drawing four walks and tallying 10 hits. Oregon has posted double-digit hits in 23 games this season.
