Centrowitz Wins Fifth U.S. 1,500 Title
06/23/18 | Track and Field
DES MOINES, Iowa - Former Oregon track and field standout Matthew Centrowitz used a great finish to win his fifth U.S. title in the 1,500 meters Saturday in the USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium.
Centrowitz's victory headlined the third day of competition for a big group of past and current Ducks. The meet will conclude on Sunday, with action airing live on NBC for two hours beginning at 1 p.m. PT.
How it Happened: Centrowitz, who was looking to reclaim the U.S. title after battling through injury last season, ran towards the back of the pack for a good portion of the race before moving into third with 400 meters to go. Sam Prakel, who ran in an Oregon uniform for the final time after graduating last weekend, was in control for much of the race, along with another former Duck, Eric Jenkins. Prakel was in the lead going around the final turn, but faded to seventh as Centrowitz used a strong final kick to surge ahead and win his fifth U.S. championship in 3:43.37. Jenkins was a close third in 3:43.74, and Prakel crossed in 3:44.01.
Alaysha Johnson, also running her last race in an Oregon jersey, qualified for the final of the 100-meter hurdles in 13.04 before placing seventh in the final in 13.23. Former UO pole vaulter Cole Walsh enjoyed a breakout day, clearing a lifetime-best 18-10.25 (5.75m) to earn a spot on the podium in third. Jasmine Todd, a five-time all-American with the Ducks, was fourth in the long jump final at 21-1.5 (6.44m).
The first round of the women's 200 meters was dominated by notable UO products. Jenna Prandini, who placed third in the 100 meters on Friday, ran the top time in the field at 22.48, with recently-graduated Ariana Washington right behind in a season-best 22.79. Former Ducks Deajah Stevens (22.81) and Phyllis Francis (22.91) posted the fourth and fifth fastest times, respectively. All four will run in the semifinal at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, with the top eight advancing to the final at 2:20 p.m. (NBC).
Two-time U.S. champion Devon Allen got his weekend off to a strong start in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles, posting the field's fastest time in 13.45. UO sophomore Braxton Canady snagged the last qualifying spot to the semifinal in 14.04. The semifinal is set for Sunday at 12:30 p.m., and the meet will conclude with the final at 2:52 p.m.
Up Next: The first event Sunday featuring past or current Ducks will be the loaded women's 200 meter semifinals (12:15 p.m.). Click here for the complete USATF Championships meet schedule.
