First Loss Comes in Five to Minnesota
09/08/23 | Women's Volleyball
Gabby Gonzales recorded the 1,000th dig of her career Friday.
STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season Friday evening, a five-set loss to No. 10 Minnesota in the first match of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge hosted by Stanford. The sixth-ranked Ducks led 2-1 but Minnesota came away with the win after a back-and-forth fifth that featured eight ties.
Including Friday, five of the past six meetings in the all-time series have been extended to at least four sets including three five setters.
Hannah Pukis had a match-high 58 assists coupled with 14 digs to complete her third double-double of the year. She also six kills and two aces against the Golden Gophers. Mimi Colyer (20 kills, 15 digs) and Gabby Gonzales (18 kills, 14 digs) joined Pukis with double-doubles of their own.
On a night where the Ducks had four players with double-digit kills, Morgan Lewis tied her career high with 16 kills while Kara McGhee put down a season-high 12 kills. It was McGhee's first time in double figures as a Duck. Both Lewis and McGhee had four blocks in the setback.
Along with libero Georgia Murphy's team-high 16 digs, Oregon also had four players with 10 or more digs. Daley McClellan wasn't far behind with seven digs.
How It Happened
From 6-all in the fifth set, Minnesota (3-2) went on a four-point run to take a 10-6 lead and force UO head coach Matt Ulmer to call timeout. The Ducks answered immediately and went ahead with a 5-0 surge, capping the run of points with a Lewis-McGhee block for an 11-10 lead. After the Gophers tied things up, Gonzales gave Oregon its final lead of the night at 12-11.
Minnesota gained control of the scoreboard and had match point at 14-13 but Colyer tooled the block for her 20th kill to extend play. However, the Gophers ended the match with consecutive kills.
Having dropped the first set and facing a 16-13 deficit in the second, the Ducks rattled off four in a row. Oregon led 17-16 after an ace by Murphy. The teams were tied four times after that score. Down 22-21, UO took advantage of two errors by its opponent to take a 24-22 advantage. The Golden Gophers saved one set point but on the ensuing point, Lewis registered a kill off the block to tie the match at 1-1.
Riding the momentum of getting on the match scoreboard, the Ducks pulled ahead 10-6 in the third set which forced a timeout by Minnesota. At the time, it was the team's largest lead of the night. The Ducks never trailed in the set and pushed their advantage to five at 18-13 and 19-14 with kills by Gonzales and Lewis, respectively.
McGhee tallied a kill for set point and then teamed up with Lewis again for the set-ending block. Oregon led 2-1.
The Ducks' only lead in the fourth came early at 2-1 before Minnesota started to pull away with eyes on forcing a fifth set. The Gophers maintained a lead of three to five points and secured the fourth on an errant serve by Oregon.
Minnesota's Mckenna Wucherer put away a match-high 21 kills.
Notable
With her 10th dig of the match, Gonzales reached 1,000 career digs between her time at Ohio State and Oregon; former OSU teammate and current Minnesota libero Kylie Murr led all players with 22 digs.
