Armando Espinosa, who spent time as an assistant coach at Marquette University, Wichita State and Arizona State, has been named University of Oregon assistant men’s tennis coach, Ducks’ head coach Kevin Kowalik announced Wednesday.
"Armando is a great addition to the Oregon tennis family," Kowalik said. "His experience as a coach within the Pac-10 is going to be a big asset. Armando comes to Eugene with a firm understanding of what it takes to compete and succeed at the collegiate level."
Espinosa began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at Arizona State from 2000-02 under Pac-10 coaching legend Lou Belken. He then took over as assistant coach at Wichita State, where he worked with Kowalik for one season (2002-03) and helped lead the Shockers to a Missouri Valley Conference title and an NCAA postseason berth. Espinosa then spent two seasons carrying out the assistant duties at Marquette University.
A graduate of Drury University in Springfield, Mo., Espinosa was a four-year letterwinner for the Panthers. He played both the No. 1 and No. 3 positions en route to being named a two-time NCAA Division II All-America honoree.
At Drury, Espinosa graduated with a double major in Criminology and Sociology. After Drury, Espinosa went to Arizona State to earn a master's degree in Justice Studies. Academically, Espinosa was a three-time academic All-America at Drury and made the Dean's List his junior and senior year.
Espinosa originally hails from Mexico City, Mexico, where as a prep he was ranked among the top 10 players in the country.
