Brett Thomas
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
A former player and 2014 Oregon graduate, Brett Thomas is in his eighth season on Mark Wasikowski’s staff and his second as an assistant coach. He spent the first six years as the director of player development/analytics at Oregon.
As an assistant coach, Thomas takes the reins as the club’s hitting coach for the 2027 season while also coaching outfielders. He spent his first season (2026) on the coaching staff leading the outfielders while assisting with the hitters and recruiting.
During his seven years at Oregon, the Ducks have won nearly 250 games compiling a 249-124 record for a 66.8 winning percentage, including a 115-65 (63.9 percent) record in conference games. In the six seasons since the COVID-19 shortened season, Oregon has averaged 40.2 wins per season while winning 67.3 percent of its games. The Ducks have won 40 or more games each of the last four seasons with a Mark Wasikowski era best 43 wins last season, the fourth most wins in program history.
Oregon has also qualified for postseason play each of those six seasons advancing to three Super Regionals while winning three regional tournaments (two on the road), the 2025 Big Ten Conference regular-season championship and the 2023 Pac-12 Conference Tournament title. The six-consecutive postseason appearances is the longest streak in program history, besting the four straight from 2012-2015 (Thomas was a player on the 2012 and 2013 teams).
Oregon (2020-present) -- Assistant Coach (2026-present), Director of Player Development/Analytics (2020-25)
Thomas helped lead the Ducks to a 42-18 season in his first season as an assistant coach at Oregon. The Ducks finished tied for third in the regular season in the Big Ten Conference before advancing to the title game of the league tournament. The Ducks earned the 11th seed and the chance to host a regional in the NCAA Tournament. The Ducks swept three games in the Eugene Regional, claiming their third regional title in the last four years.
On the field, Oregon continued its six-year stretch of excellence both at the plate and in the field. The Ducks finished among the national leaders in four hitting and a pair of fielding categories. UO ranked 17th nationally while leading the Big Ten Conference in home runs (105) and home runs per game (1.72), while ranking 33rd in the nation in slugging percentage (.497) and 37th in hits (591). Defensively, the Ducks ranked ninth in the country in fielding percentage (.982) and 43rd in double plays (46).
The Ducks offensive output in 2026 was good enough to rank in the top 10 in program history in nine separate statistical categories. The Ducks belted 105 home runs and finished with 1,035 total bases, good for second and third respectively all-time at Oregon. The 2026 squad also ranked fourth in hits (590), RBI (406), runs (430), walks (273) and at-bats (2,086), while ranking sixth in doubles (108) and 10th in stolen bases (65).
In his seven seasons at Oregon, the Ducks’ offense has rewritten the program’s record books setting 19 new school records in eight of the major hitting categories.
In his first season as an assistant coach, Thomas tutored two freshmen All-Americans and three all-conference selections. In 2026, a pair of Oregon first-year players claimed freshman All-America honors. Brayden Jaksa earned a spot on three freshman All-America teams at two separate positions. Jaksa was a first-team pick by Baseball America (First Base) while claiming second-team honors from both the NCBWA (Catcher) and Perfect Game (Catcher). Outfielder Angel Laya was a first-team pick by Perfect Game. Both were also named to the Big Ten Conference All-Freshman Team along with designated hitter Naulivou Lauaki Jr., with Laya and Lauaki both setting freshman program records for home runs (14).
Third baseman Drew Smith capped a successful career with the Ducks earning a spot on the All-Big Ten Conference first team. Second baseman Ryan Cooney was named to the second team, while Lauaki claimed third-team honors.
During Thomas’ seven-year tenure on Mark Wasikowski’s staff, eight Duck position players (Mason Neville, Jacob Walsh, Drew Cowley, Aaron Zavala -2x, Gabe Matthews, Tanner Smith and Kenyon Yovan) have claimed All-America honors with four more (Jaksa, Laya, Maddox Molony and Walsh) earning freshman All-America accolades. In addition to being an All-American, Zavala was the NCBWA District 9 and Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year in 2021. The Ducks have also had 11 all-region selections and 27 all-conference picks, including 12 first-teamers during Thomas’ time at UO.
While working in the analytics and player development role, Thomas served as a vital cog in helping Oregon win 198 games, an average of 39.6 per season, over five seasons following the COVID-19 shortened 2020 campaign. During that span, UO’s wins and winning percentage (.667) ranked in the top four among teams on the West Coast.
During his tenure working with player development and as an assistant coach at Oregon, Thomas has worked with 16 of the top 27 highest-drafted position players in Oregon’s modern-era history, including the top two. In the 2021 MLB Draft, Aaron Zavala became the first modern-era Duck position player picked in the first or second rounds when the Texas Rangers selected him in the second round with the 38th overall pick. Josh Kasevich joined Zavala as a second-round pick in 2022 when the Toronto Blue Jays picked him with the 60th overall selection.
Anthony Hall became the fifth-highest position player draft pick in 2022 when the New York Yankees selected him in the fourth round (130 overall) before falling to eighth after Sabin Ceballos moved into the four slot after the Atlanta Braves selected him in the third round (94 overall) of the 2023 draft, Cooney went to the Blue Jays in the third round (103 overall) of last year’s draft and Neville was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round (114 overall) of the 2025 draft. Molony became the eighth highest going to the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round (176 overall) of last year’s draft, while Brennan Milone is the ninth highest going to the Oakland A’s in the sixth round (184 overall) in 2022. Colby Shade ranks as the 13th highest drafted Oregon position player after the Miami Marlins picked him in the ninth round (263 overall) in 2023, just before Rikuu Nishida who is the 15th highest going to the Chicago White Sox in the 11th round (329 overall). Bennett Thompson is the 16th highest after being picked by the Cleveland Guardians in the 13th round (385 overall) in 2024, while Bryce Boettcher is now the 17th highest after he was selected 18 picks after Thompson in the 13th round (403 overall) by the Houston Astros. Jacob Walsh is now in the 18th slot after the Washington Nationals made him their 15th round selection (441 overall) in 2025. Smith moved into the 19th spot after the San Francisco Giants selected him in the 15th round (448 overall) in last year’s draft before Jack Brooks joined him as the 22nd highest pick when the Washington Nationals selected him in the 19th round (556 overall) last year. Anson Aroz is 27th after going to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 19th round (585 overall) in 2025.
Including the 16 draft picks, Thomas has worked with 18 Ducks who have gone on to play professional baseball. Both Matthews and Yovan signed free agent contracts with the Los Angeles Angels after finishing their collegiate careers.
Before Oregon
Thomas previously worked for Blast Motion, Inc., a sports technology company. He worked with over 100 collegiate, academy and high school programs helping to implement and apply the company’s technology.
Playing Career
Thomas played for Oregon from 2011-13. During his three seasons, the Ducks won 127 games and advanced to the postseason twice, including a Super Regional appearance in 2012.
During the 2013 season, Thomas hit .317 with 28 RBI and was an honorable mention All-Pac-12 All-Conference selection. He also made the all-tournament team after Oregon won the 2012 Eugene Regional, going 5-for-13 with four RBI, including three RBI in the regional final against Austin Peay.
The Seattle Mariners drafted Thomas in the 21st round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft and he played two seasons in their organization.
Personal
Thomas and his wife, Meredith, have two sons (Jett and Baker).
