Few Oregon defensive linemen were ever more imposing on the gridiron, yet more soft-spoken off the field, than the Salt Lake City native who became the school’s first consensus All-American in more than four decades. Haloti Ngata parlayed his mammoth size and strength to become a dominant force in the trenches as evidenced by his selection as an Outland Trophy and Nagurski Trophy finalist as one of the nation’s top interior linemen and best defenders, respectively. The first-team freshman All-American and three-year starter was voted as the Pac-10 Conference’s co-defensive player of the year as well as the league’s top defensive lineman following his junior year before opting for the NFL one year early. Leading the conference’s interior linemen in tackles (61) his final year, he became the school’s first defensive lineman to be named team MVP in 18 seasons. He capped his collegiate tenure with 151 tackles and a school-record seven blocked kicks. Included was a single-game high 14 tackles (11 unassisted) vs. California in the Ducks’ 27-20 overtime win. Selected to the Pac-10’s “All-Century Team” in 2015, Oregon’s highest defensive line draft choice at that time was the 12th player taken in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, where he was a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time AP first-team All-Pro selection in his first nine seasons of his professional football career.
