Massey, Uusorg Claim World U20 Silver

EUGENE, Ore. – Incoming Oregon freshman Jaslene Massey and Mia Uusorg won silver medals Thursday at the World Athletics U20 Championships inside Hayward Field. Massey was the discus runner-up while Uusorg was second in the heptathlon.

Massey, in her first of two finals Thursday, safely advanced through the opening three rounds and stood in fifth place with three throws to go. She moved into silver position with a throw of 56.17 meters in the fourth round. Massey saved her best of last, getting out to 58.41m/191-7 to strengthen her hold on the silver medal.

The Aliso Viejo, Calif., native is the first American woman to medal in the U20 discus since 2014 (Valerie Allman). In her second event of the day, Massey finished eighth in the shot put. The discus and shot put were placed back to back in the schedule; Massey qualified for the shot put final in Thursday's morning session.

Future Oregon teammate Simon Rosselli will take on the men's discus which begins Saturday.

Uusorg began the day in ninth place but used top-three event finishes in the long jump, javelin and 800 to secure her runner-up finish. In the final event, the Estonian standout ran a lifetime best of 2:13.90 to move from third place to second overall. Over the course of the two-day competition, Uusorg recorded personal bests in the 800 meters, 100-meter hurdles and shot put.

More than 1,800 athletes representing 147 countries are set to compete over the course of the five-day meet. Eugene previously hosted his meet in 2014, then staged as the World Junior Championships.
