Men's Tennis Team 1929
- Induction:
- 1996
Oregon's first national collegiate championship was secured on the clay courts of Austin, Texas. The Ducks' Bradshaw Harrison defeated the nation's top-ranked top-ranked singles player before teaming with Sherman Lockwood to knock off the Longhorns' top doubles tandem to forge a national co-championship with Texas. Coach Edward Abercrombie's squad of Harrison, Lockwood, Henry Neer and Stanley Almquist bettered every Western squad in garnering Northern Division and Pacific Coast Conference crowns, and made its way to national fortune despite a grueling, three-day train trip. Lockwood later became the tennis coach as Stanford before he was killed in a World War II plane crash.
