The transition from the basketball court to the wrestling mat finally paid dividends for Shane Webster as the two-time All-American became Oregon’s first NCAA wrestling champion in 37 years. Picking up the sport at the age of 7 after becoming overly aggressive shooting baskets, the two-time state high school wrestling champion and Southern Oregon native carried his prep success (160-6 record) onto the collegiate level. The four-time national championships qualifier placed third in his Pac-10 conference-meet debut in 2002 before emerging on the national scene the following year with a 31-8 ledger as a sophomore. The Pac-10 runner-up and sixth-place NCAA finisher (174 lbs.) came within two points of his first conference title in 2003 but he wasn’t satisfied. Despite winning his first conference crown the following year, his aspirations again were dampened at the national championship level. It wasn’t until his final year when the Ducks’ three-time Outstanding Wrestler Award recipient reached the heights he aspired, claiming his second consecutive league title (184 lbs.). He capped the year establishing a single-season school record winning percentage of .973 (37-1) as the NCAA bracket’s fifth seed disposed of three of the wrestlers ranked above him en route to becoming Oregon’s second national collegiate wrestling champion ever. Tying for fourth all time in school history in career victories (106), he became one of two Oregon athletes to be named to the Pac-12’s “All Century” wrestling team in 2015.
