EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? It may have been the biggest shopping day of the year, but nobody could buy a basket Friday
night at McArthur Court.
Brandi Davis and Andrea Bills each scored 14 points as No. 24 Oregon overcame a poor shooting performance
with a 54-51 win over the Kansas in front of 4,388 at McArthur Court in the Oregon Classic.
The Ducks (4-0) shot 29.6 percent (16-of-54) from the field and 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the foul line.
“Our defense is what won us the game because our offense wasn't clicking,” Davis said. “We know if we play good defense, we're going to win. We'll take this and learn from it.”
Crystal Kemp scored 11 points to lead the Jayhawks (0-2), who shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the floor. The loss spoiled the 900th game of Marian Washington's 31-year Kansas coaching career.
Cathrine Kraayeveld added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Oregon, her 20th career double-double.
“There really is no excuse as to why we played so poor," Oregon coach Bev Smith said. "But we did hang in there defensively and played really tough.”
Trailing by as much as 11 in the second half, Kansas rallied to take a 45-42 lead on a Kaylee Brown 3-pointer with 3:36 to play.
Oregon reclaimed the lead at 48-47 when Davis sank an acrobatic finger roll layup with 1:42 left, bringing the Duck fans to their feet.
“I just saw an opening and thought it was the wisest move,” Davis said. “I was actually looking for a foul, but I was happy I could help the team.”
Corrie Mizusawa connected on 4-of-6 free throw attempts in the final 34 seconds to seal the win.
The Ducks held Kansas to only one field goal ? a Kandis Bonner turn-around jumper at the with 1:49 to play ? in the final 8:53 of the first half. The Jayhawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Brown 3-pointer. Oregon answered with a 13-4 run capped off by a Eleanor Haring lay-in on a behind-the-back pass from Mizusawa.
The Ducks led 26-20 at halftime.
