Women's Basketball Defeats Kansas 67-60, Wins Jayhawk Classic
08/06/03 | Women's Basketball
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Alyssa Fredrick had team-bests of 15 points and eight rebounds Saturday to lead the University of Oregon women's basketball team to a 67-60 win over Kansas in the Jayhawk Classic championship game.
Oregon improved its record to 4-3 while Kansas dropped to 3-4.
"We really focused on our game plan again," first-year Oregon coach Bev Smith said. "We definitely stymied Kansas' offense. Alyssa also did an unbelievable job in the paint."
Fredrick, whose points total was the best in her Oregon career, hit 7 of 11 from the floor and added two blocked shots.
Oregon junior guard Shaquala Williams, selected the Jayhawk Classic MVP, scored eight of her 13 points in the second half and helped the Ducks thwart Kansas' comeback efforts with strong defense.
"Kansas wouldn't die. They kept fighting back," Williams said. "It was a good test for us on the road and this will make us a better team."
Kansas, which trailed the entire game, cut Oregon's lead to 51-47 on a KC Hilgenkamp (21 points) jumper with 5:54 left. Edniesha Curry was too tough on the Jayhawks, though, stealing a pass and scoring a lay-in then penetrating and dishing to Fredrick underneath on two consecutive possessions to give Oregon a 61-51 lead with 2:27 on the clock. Curry, who struggled from the field (2 of 8), finished with 10 points, six rebounds and a game-high eight assists. She also had three steals and a block.
"I really liked our character and composure (down the stretch)," said Smith, whose team shot 62 percent from the field in the second half. "Any time your team can come in here on the road and get a win, that's great."
Jamie Craighead, who made the All-Tournament team, was Oregon's other double-figure scorer with 13, hitting 3 of 5 from the floor, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, and passed out five assists. She was 8 of 11 from 3-point territory in the two games.
"We're starting to click and really get a rhythm both defensively and offensively," Williams said.
The Ducks established a season-best for assists with 21 and tied a season-high with seven blocked shots.
Oregon returns to Eugene to take on Utah Saturday at McArthur Court. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
