Ducks Blast 'Cats, 48-10
09/13/03 | Football
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Demetrius Williams caught three touchdown passes -- two from Kellen Clemens and one from Jason Fife -- as Oregon handed Arizona its 12th consecutive Pac-10 home loss, 48-10 on Saturday night.
Fife threw for another score and ran for one, and the Ducks' defense shut down the Wildcats, who have been outscored 107-23 in consecutive home losses to LSU and Oregon.
Only a 53-yard touchdown pass from Ryan O'Hara to Brian Ealy with 3:42 to play prevented it from being the fourth-worst home loss in Arizona football history. Last week's 59-13 beating by LSU was the third-worst.
The Ducks (3-0, 1-0 Pac-10)) beat Arizona (1-2, 0-1) for the fifth time in a row, the last three in Tucson. Oregon has won nine of 10 against the Wildcats.
Embattled Arizona coach John Mackovic fell to 0-8 in home Pac-10 games and 3-14 in conference games overall in just over two seasons with the Wildcats.
Fans in the student section chanted "Fire Mackovic!" early in the game.
Williams, a sophomore who became Oregon's prime receiver after Samie Parker left with a sprained ankle in the first quarter, had five catches for 139 yards, including touchdowns of 3, 65 and 30.
The Ducks, who host No. 5 Michigan next weekend, led 20-0 and dominated the first-half statistics 210 yards to 42, 108-2 on the ground. Oregon led in time of possession through the first two quarters 33:48 to 11:12.
Oregon took a 3-0 lead on Jared Siegel's 29-yard field goal with 9:42 left in the first quarter after Kevin Mitchell recovered a fumble by Arizona's Mike Bell at the Wildcats 19.
Fife replaced the starter Clemens and directed the Ducks 66 yards on 13 plays. The drive stalled on the Arizona 7 and Siegel's 22-yard field goal made it 6-0 with 1:24 remaining in the first quarter.
The Ducks used up 5:17 of the second quarter on a 12-play, 51-yard drive, Fife scoring on a five-yard option play. The Oregon senior seemed stopped in the backfield, but he stepped past at least three would-be tacklers for the score to make it 13-0 with 8:56 to go in the first half.
Clemens returned and Oregon went 48 yards in nine plays, using up another 4:03. On third-and-goal from the 3, Clemens threw to Williams for the touchdown to put the Ducks up 20-0 with 1:02 left until halftime.
The Wildcats took the second-half kickoff and drove to the Oregon 27, aided by a third-down facemask penalty. Bobby Gill's 44-yard field goal cut the lead to 20-3.
The Ducks blew it open with touchdowns on their next four possessions, including Clemens' 65-yarder to a wide-open Williams and Fife's 30-yard sidelines pass to the sophomore receiver.
Clemens and Fife combined to complete 13 consecutive passes from late in the second quarter through the third.
