11/05/04 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. ? In the first exhibition for the University of Oregon women's basketball team, the Ducks defeated Western Oregon 75-23 before 2,948 fans Friday at McArthur Court.
Senior front-court stalwarts Andrea Bills and Cathrine Kraayeveld dominated the inside with 12 and 10 points respectively. Kraayeveld, who has recovered from surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament, added a game-high nine rebounds.
The Wolves, an NCAA Division II team from Monmouth, shot just 17 percent on 8-of-50 shooting while Oregon hit on 32-of-63 for 51 percent.
“We took a lot of first-look shots in the first half,” Oregon coach Bev Smith said. “We need to work on getting the ball inside. If we get the ball inside and then kick it back outside, that's OK.”
Despite the accurate shooting from the floor, the Ducks struggled at the free-throw line, making just 6-of-15.
“We have got to work on getting to the free throw line and shooting better from the line,” Smith said.
Freshman post player Gabrielle Richards also made her presence felt. In just 14 minutes on the floor, she converted 4-of-5 from the field en route to nine points to go with nine rebounds. Senior guard Brandi Davis and junior guard Chelsea Wagner also each scored nine points in limited action as they combined to make 5-of-11 from 3-point range.
“We're still in the preparation phase, though we're further ahead in our progress than ever before at this point in the season.”
The Ducks next play host to the Sports Travelers in their final exhibition Nov. 12 at McArthur Court. Tipoff is at 5 p.m. The game will be followed by the season finale for the Oregon volleyball team as it takes on California.
