Mitchum Blazes to School Hurdle Record at Mt. SAC
04/18/04 | Track and Field
Mitchum took second overall with a whopping .14-second school record (13.53, w:2.0) in the maximum record-allowable wind reading behind Brazilian entrant Matheus Facho (13.46, w:2.0). Both entrants ran in the first heat, while second heat winner Bryan Clay of Nike ranked third overall among the two sections (13.80, w:0.5).
The Calumet City, Ill., native Mitchum entered the meet with a wind-legal best of 13.70 (w:1.6) from the Pepsi Team Invitational last weekend and also ran a wind-aided 13.50w (w:3.0) the week before in the Texas Relays. Mitchum's time Sunday rewrote the former best of another recent All-American, Micah Harris, from 2002 (13.67). Mitchum entered the weekend ranked second nationally with his 13.50 wind-aided mark from Austin, behind Florida junior Josh Walker (13.47).
"My start was pretty good," Mitchum said, " and I sped up from then and hoped for the best. I don't remember much from the race - I don't know if I hit any hurdles, and saw only one other person during the race. The goal was to break the school record, which I did so I'm happy with that. The time in Texas that was a surprise, and Pepsi was an OK race but not great. This was probably the best race of the season."
In other Duck men's action, sophomore AK Ikwuakor was less than a second from his season best in the 400 hurdles (27th overall, 53.31) and was followed by senior Brandon Holliday (35th, 54.15), senior Trevor Woods took fifth in the university pole vault (16-4 3/4), and the 4x400 relay took seventh in the invitational section (3:27.49). Oregon sent three other pole vaulters, but freshman Tommy Skipper did not compete in the elite section, and sophomore Jon Derby and freshman David Moore no-heighted in the university section.
On the women's side, junior Sofie Abildtrup competed in the 100 (second, 18th, 12.01, w:0.0) and 200 (eighth-overall, second-first heat, 23.93, w: 0.5). Her 100 season debut tied her for 10th all-time for the Ducks with Nicole Commissiong's mark from 1996, and her 200 clocking was a .01-second personal best over her previous mark from the Pepsi Team Invitational that put her seventh all-time in school history last week (23.94). Her improvement also left her only .01-second shy of the Ducks' #6 spot all-time held by Camara Jones (23.92, 1995).
"(Compared to last week's 200) I had better competition today for sure," Abildtrup said, "but I miss the Oregon homecrowd."
In the field, junior Clarice Hayward-Lee took fourth in the triple jump (38-11 1/2, w:0.0) and was barely four inches shy of her wind-legal best (39-3 3/4) from the Stanford Invite in late March.

Up the road in nearby Long Beach, results were finally made available from Saturday's Long Beach Invitational.
The Duck women's sprinters took the 3-6 positions in the 400 hurdles and were led by freshman Amanda Santana (62.23), who won the second heat and ran an almost three-second season best.
Senior Abby Andrus followed in second in Santana's heat and fourth overall (62.29) in her season debut, and was followed by junior Kayla Mellott (fourth overall, third-first heat, 63.82) and senior C'Rel McAllister (sixth overall, second-heat two, 64.02). Santana and Andrus just missed the Pac-10 standard 62.04, while Mellott has already earned an invite thanks her season best (61.43) from last weekend's Pepsi Team Invitational on April 10.
Junior Michelle Donovan added seventh overall in the 400 and won the third heat (57.68). Her clocking was less than a second off her season best from the Pepsi Team Invitational (56.80).
Other Duck women's finishers included juniors Rachael Kriz (high jump, third, 5-4 1/4) and Maegan Traver (triple jump, ninth, 36-5 3/4).
Only one Oregon male competed Saturday as freshman Travis Ramme made his season debuts in the 100 (21st, 10.97) and 200 (12th, 22.70) with no wind readings available in either race.
Looking ahead, the Duck men and women return home to compete in the Oregon Invitational, Thu.-Sat., April 22-24. A heptathlon and decathlon kick the meet off on Thursday at noon and the same time again on Friday. The 10,000-meter races follow Friday evening at 7 pm, while the majority of the meet's events follow in Saturday's two-session affair. The day session will feature half of the field event slate and multiple sections of running events and starts at 10 am and runs until 2:15 pm. The remainder of field events and top sections of virtually all running events will be contested Saturday evening with the first field event at 3 pm, first running event at 4:45 pm, and final event ending at 8 pm.
