04/04/04 | Women's Golf
TEMPE, Ariz. ? The Oregon women's golf team shot a final round 299 to finish 13th Sunday at the Ping/ASU Invitational. The Ducks entered the final round in 14th, but used their lowest round of the tournament to pass Oregon State in the final standings.
Sophomore Therese Wenslow continued her strong play for Oregon this spring, tying for 22nd at 6-over 222 following Sunday's round of 73. Johnna Nealy, a junior from Grants Pass, Ore., took 54th at 230, while sophomores Erin Andrews and Michelle Timpani both rebounded from earlier struggles to shoot 75 Sunday. Timpani finished tied for 55th at 231.
"We played a lot better today," said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard. "We played the way we had been playing coming into this tournament -- really solidly. We were able to move up a spot and finish on a high note. We just need to work out a few kinks and get ready for our next tournament."
Led by individual medalist Charlotte Mayorkas, second-ranked UCLA won the tournament going away, finishing at 861 to defeat No. 9 USC by 16 strokes. No. 6 New Mexico was third at 881, followed by No. 17 Texas at 885, No. 5 California at 886, No. 10 Arizona at 890, No. 24 Stanford at 891, No. 16 Tulsa at 892 and No. 12 Washington and Pepperdine tied at 898 to round out the top 10.
Host Arizona State took 11th at 901, followed by New Mexico State (907), Oregon (915), Oregon State and Texas Christian at 919, San Jose State at 917 and Northern Arizona at 956.
Mayorkas tied the 6,230-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course record with her final round 65. She finished 9-under for the tournament, and her closest competition came from teammate Gina Umeck, who shot a 4-under 212.
Oregon has one last tune-up, the April 10-11 Peg Barnard California Collegiate at Stanford, before the Pac-10 Championships April 19-21 at Saticoy, Calif.
