NCAA West Regional Qualifier

Skipper, Malone & Mitchum Win Titles in NCAA West Regional Second Day
05/29/04 | Track and Field
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of Oregon men's and women's track and field teams opened action in the NCAA West Regional at Cal State Northridge's Matador Complex Friday with two women and six men claiming top-five finishes and invites to the NCAA Championships field, set for Austin, Texas, Wed.-Sat., June 9-12.
In the men's pole vault, freshman Tommy Skipper reassumed the national lead with a Pac-10 record clearance of 18-10 1/4, and won the event by more than a foot over UCLA's Yoo Kim and BYU's Robbie Pratt (second-tie, 17-7). "I had no idea that something like this would happen today," Skipper said. "Mark (Vanderville, assistant coach) told me to only worry about technique today, not heights or places. It's easy to say that, but I was actually able to. Once I got over 17-11, things started to really get rolling." Skipper's mark was an outdoor personal best by seven inches over his previous best set last meet in the Pac-10 finale (18-3 1/4). He also broke the former outdoor league record of 18-9 1/4 set by Stanford's Toby Stevenson in 2000, while only one other Pac-10 vaulter - recent two-time NCAA indoor champion Brad Walker of Washington - has gone higher, albeit indoors (19-1 1/4 in 2003) The Sandy, Ore., native Skipper passed the initial three heights before he opened at 17-3 and needed two attempts to clear. He followed with a first-attempt make at 17-7 to take the lead from UCLA's Kim. At the next height of 17-11, the three remaining jumpers all missed their first two tries, and Skipper was the only to make his third attempt, thus guaranteeing the victory. At the next bar of 18-3, Skipper cleanly matched his second all-time best outdoor mark (and his prep national record from last year), then again skied over the following height of 18-6 1/2. He made his third straight first attempt, this time at a Pac-10 record of 18-10 1/4 to break the Pac-10 outdoor record, then asked the bar move up to 19-1 1/2 (5.83), but missed his three attempts on his biggest pole in his bag - one that was arguably too small to adequately clear 19 feet for the first time. Regardless, Saturday's outdoor best also improved upon his all-time indoor best of 18-8 3/4 from early February that ranked him first on the 2004 NCAA collegiate list. A month later in the NCAA Indoor Championships, he cleared his now third-highest height (18-4 1/2) to finish second in his NCAA debut behind returning champion and now graduated Brad Walker of Washington. Other NCAA pole vault qualifiers Saturday included UCLA's Pat Luke (fourth, 17-3) and Cal Poly's Jon Takahashi (fifth, 17-3). Three other Ducks competed in the event Saturday, but the trio of senior Trevor Woods, sophomore Jon Derby and redshirt freshman David Moore all no-heighted. Four other Duck sprinters advanced automatically to Austin, Texas in the 400, 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles, along with UO's 4x400 relay. Sophomore Matt Scherer took fourth in the 400 and tied his all-time best (45.95) that he ran two weeks ago in the Pac-10 finale. The Sumner, Ill., native entered the meet ranked fifth in the event with his personal best from Tucson, Ariz., in mid-May. He almost bettered that mark Friday again in his prelim effort (46.14) which is still his third-fastest time of his career. Overall in the event, UCLA's Craig Everhart blazed to a 44.89 clocking, ahead of the ASU duo of Lewis Banda (second, 45.10) and Jason Barton (45.47). UCLA's Denye Vershe claimed the other NCAA invite (fifth, 46.26). Scherer came back to anchor the Ducks to their second-fastest 4x400 relay time ever (3:03.93) as UO took second behind top-seeded ASU (first, 3:01.77). Sophomore Travis Anderson led off and passed to Holliday, who then handed off to junior Kedar Inico who was announced to have run a 45.4 split, followed by Scherer. The Sun Devils entered the meet seeded third nationally with a season best of 3:01.26, and the Ducks were only 12 meters behind ASU's A unit in the final lap as Oregon nearly matched their school record of 3:03.49 from their Pac-10 runner-up finish. Before the championship season, Oregon's overall school record stood at 3:06.54 from the 2004 indoor season, and their former outdoor best came in the 2003 NCAA prelims (3:06.73). Sophomore Eric Mitchum weathered a slow start in the 110 hurdles to storm back for the win (13.72, w:0.4) over UCLA's Anthony Golston (second, 13.86) and Jonathan Williams (third, 14.06). "It was not my best time or performance," Mitchum said, "but I tried to stay focused, and come back and get the win. I didn't worry about what I was ranked coming into today. I just tried to run my race, and today was still a good learning experience. I watched the Home Depot Invite last week on TV and tried to emulate some of the things that the pro's emphasize - like leaning more over the hurdle and using my arms more to drive." The Calumet City, Ill., native Mitchum entered the weekend ranked first in the regional and second nationally with his windy season best of 13.50w (w:3.0) from April's Texas Relays, and also added the school record (13.53) two weeks later in the Mt. SAC Relays. In the same event, the Ducks also advanced sophomore AK Ikwuakor to Austin thanks to his fifth-place finish (14.13) that was a full quarter-second ahead of Sac State's Andre Wright (sixth, 14.38) for the final nod. Ikwuakor's previous season best came in the Pac-10 prelims and final (14.16), and the Arvada, Colo., native was just off his personal best from last season for Colorado (14.10) which came in the South Regional prelims. Senior Brandon Holliday came away with his second NCAA invite in the 400 hurdles and ranked fourth in the final (51.02), behind UCLA's Brandon Johnson (first, 49.64) and Jonathan Williams (second, 50.14) and BYU's Greg Flint (third, 50.59). Holliday was just shy of his second sub-51-second clocking of the season after he logged a quarter-second personal best to place fourth in the Pac-10 final (50.52). The Beaverton, Ore., native advanced to Saturday's final after he won his prelim Friday in a time of 51.51. In the distances, freshman Kyle Alcorn won the B section of the steeplechase (8:54.97) and his 12-second personal best was barely three seconds from the fifth and final overall qualifier (8:51.67). Alcorn ran an intelligent race in third place of his heat for much of the way, before he passed Stanford's Jonathan Pierce with two laps to go. With just over 400 left, Alcorn then surged ahead of previous leader Dave Vidal of Stanford who had led virtually all of the race by at least 20-40 meters. Pierce ended up ranking 13th overall (9:00.35), and Vidal stood 16th (9:12.86). In the steeplechase's faster section, junior Brett Holts tried to overcome a slight foot injury and vied for a top-five finish going into the final lap before he eventually ended 10th in his heat and 11th overall (8:58.69). The Bend, Ore., native ran the first mile between 8th-10th places, then progressively moved up three places to a high of fifth on the homestretch heading into the final lap, before he was passed in the final 200-300 meters by several runners. The Bend, Ore., native Holts still looks like a likely choice for one of the NCAA field's 5-8 at-large bids as do several other West Regional non-top five finishers. Northern Arizona's Henrik Ahnstrom (14th, 9:11.14) ranks fifth nationally on the season best list (8:42.19), and Idaho's Jan Eitel (DNF Sat.,), Weber State's Ken Richardson (sixth Saturday, 8:53.94), and Holts rank ninth (8:43.94), 10th (8:44.29) and 11th nationally and would also be among the first four picks by the NCAA committee early next week to fill out the 26-28 man field. In the field, senior javelin thrower Adam Jenkins took eighth for the second straight season in the regional showdown (210-7), in an event won by Long Beach's Doug Lefler (first, 237-4) over Boise State's Gabriel Walling (second, 235-9). On the women's side, redshirt junior Sarah Malone claimed her third NCAA trip in the javelin Saturday and won by six feet, seven inches (173-10) over Washington's Megan Spriesterbach (second, 167-3) and USC's Inge Stasiulionyte (third, 166-2). Malone opened with a throw of 164-5 (50.12m) to lead the field by one centimeter after the initial round over Stasliounyte. Malone then improved to 171-10 (52.39m) and 173-10 (52.98m) on her second and third throws. In the final, she fouled her fourth and fifth attempts, then passed on her sixth try with the victory in hand. "On my first throw, I had an awkward plant and kind of came down wrong and jiggled a muscle in my ribcage," Malone said. "I figured that mark probably wouldn't hold up for the win, so I tried to relax it as much as I could, and give it a few more tries. We had a little headwind which helped me some, and it would have really helped when it picked up except we had just finished. First place wasn't that big a deal in reality, because I know Inge and others will be ready to really go after it at nationals, since she's basically already qualified." The Newberg, Ore., native Malone posted her fifth meet in seven contests this season past the 170-foot line - a string that included a school record of 179-7 in the Texas Relays in early April. Also in the throws, redshirt junior Bree Fuqua took advantage of a daily best on her first throw (52-8 3/4) to eventually hold on to fourth place. The Poulson, Mont., claimed her first-ever NCAA invite after registering NCAA provisional marks indoors for the Ducks in 2004, and in years prior for her former Wisconsin squad. Fuqua's 3 1/4-inch personal best Saturday also inched her closer to school record holder Quenna Beasley (53-1 1/2, 1983). Overall in the shot put, Stanford's top-seeded Jillian Camarena won (55-7 3/4) by 10 1/2 inches over USC's L'Oranergie Crawford (second, 54-9 1/4). Redshirt sophomore Sara Schaaf scored for the second straight championship appearance this month in the 800 final (eighth, 2:10.46). The Klamath Falls, native qualified for the final the day before with a personal best in Friday's prelims (2:07.89). Junior triple jumper Clarice Hayward-Lee ended 17th in Saturday's final (37-4 1/2). BYU's Kamila Rywelska won the event (42-8) by four inches over UCLA's Candic Baucham (second, 42-4). In the high jump, redshirt junior Rachael Kriz no-heighted at the opening bar of 5-6 1/2. The Toledo, Ore., native led the Ducks this year with a personal best of 5-8, and also tied for fifth in the recent Pac-10 Championships (5-6). UCLA's Sheena Gordon won the event on fewer misses on her final clearance over 6-2 over Cal Poly's Kaylene Wagner (second) and Sharon Day (third). The men's and women's meets were also scored in a team format as UCLA won the men's crown with 141 points, over USC (second, 82), BYU (third, 79 1/2), and Oregon and ASU (fourth-tie, 63). The Bruins also won the women's team title with 141 points, and edged USC (second, 79), Stanford (third, 74) and BYU (fourth, 56). "The women had another impressive showing and I'm not surprised," Oregon head coach

Looking ahead to the Austin finale, the NCAA Championships committee will add 5-8 athletes per field early this week to fill out the 21 men's and women's events. The Duck men will also likely send a pair of decathletes - sophomore Andy Young and redshirt senior Gabriel LeMay - and automatically qualified senior 10K runner Ryan Andrus. Senior women's heptathlete Abby Andrus will also likely net an NCAA return when the fields are announced this week since she also ranks top-25 on the NCAA provisional list in her event like Young and LeMay.
