EUGENE ? The University of Oregon men's team (6-3, 0-0) got off the losing snide, defeating UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, at the Student Tennis Center Sunday. Oregon senior Sven Swinnen improved to 8-0 in dual play with a straight set victory.
"It was good to get back on the winning track," first-year Oregon head coach Kevin Kowalik said. "We are still trying to find our niche as a team, but I felt we competed a lot better than we did against Boise State."
Oregon jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Thomas Bieri and Markus Schiller won their team-leading sixth dual of the season, defeating the Gauchos' Ivan d'Argence and Matt Coin, 8-4.
After a quick win for Swinnen at the No. 1 position, Schiller improved to 12-6 on the year with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Anders Dalskov at the No. 3 position.
Eugene native and Sheldon High School alum Arron Spencer won in straight sets at No. 5, while Bieri needed three sets to dispose of UCSB's Elad Stern.
Oregon travels to the Midwest next weekend to take on Minnesota (Fri., 3:30 p.m.) in Minneapolis and Northwestern (Sat., 6 p.m.) in Evanston, Ill.
