EUGENE, Ore. ? A second-half rally by the University of Oregon women's lacrosse team again fell short as Colgate defeated the Ducks 15-9 before 386 fans Saturday at Pap? Field.
Oregon fell to 0-5 on the season while Colgate improved to 4-1.
The Ducks, down 9-2 after Colgate's Jess Van der Meulen scored nearly three minutes into the second half, scored five of the next seven goals to cut the Raiders' lead to 11-7 with 16:35 left in the game. All five Oregon goals were scored by different players ? Erin Gaebe, Cara Mead, Jenny Browne, Jana Bradley and Jen May.
Colgate responded with back-to-back goals by Katie McVeigh, who, along with teammate Kelly Winning, notched four goals on the afternoon.
“(Colgate is) a great team,” Oregon coach Jen Larsen said. “We knew that coming in. In the first half, we held them scoreless for 15 minutes. We are winning some halves. We are focusing on that. We were combating last week, when we were held scoreless for 33 minutes.”
Oregon recorded the game's first goal on a Bradley shot, but Colgate then reeled off six straight. The Ducks didn't score again until 1:31 left in the half as May found the back of the net on an assist from Lindsay Pittard.
“We need to put together a 60-minute game,” said May, who had a team-high three goals. “When we do, it will be big ... it will be a win. It's tough to come back when you are so down.”
The Ducks rotated goalkeepers with Louisa Dorsch getting the start, but Allison O'Brien logged a solid 32 minutes, including the first half's final 22.
“Allison had a great week of practice,” Larsen said. “She deserved every minute. And when Louisa came back in, she was able to keep her head in the game.”
“Allison did well,” Dorsch said. “It's a good thing they pulled me. They were shooting high and close-in. I'll work on that in practice.”
Oregon next plays host to Marist on Friday at 7 p.m. at Pap? Field.
