03/25/05 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE ? The University of Oregon men's tennis team lost its Pac-10 opener, 6-1, to California Friday. The Ducks (7-10, 0-1) are in the midst of a seven-match losing streak, which they will attempt to end tomorrow when they play host to No. 10 Stanford at 1 p.m.
Playing for the first time this year, junior Thomas Bieri and senior Manuel Kost provided Oregon with its lone doubles win, defeating Cal's Tyler Browne and Daniel Sebescen, 8-5, at the No. 2 position. Bieri and Kost are the 17th different doubles team to play in a dual match this season for the Ducks.
The Ducks did manage to force a third set in three different singles matches, but the Golden Bears capitalized on two of three to seal the victory.
Junior Arron Spencer (Sheldon HS) grabbed Oregon's only victory, coming back from a set down to defeat Cal's Daniel Sebescen, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.
No. 22-ranked Sven Swinnen was defeated for only the second time in the last 22 matches, falling to Cal's 19th-ranked Conor Niland, 6-2, 6-3. Swinnen is now 13-1 in dual play.
The Ducks return to action tomorrow (Sat.) when they play host to No. 10 Stanford at 1 p.m. The Cardinal were defeated by No. 16 Washington, 5-2, Friday.
