Duck Trio Nab NCAA Marks in Seattle

SEATTLE ? In the final weekend of the track and field indoor regular season, three Duck men logged NCAA qualifying marks in the University of Washington's Last Chance Saturday.
Among the 11 Ducks that competed in UW's Dempsey Indoor Center, sophomore pole vaulter and returning NCAA indoor runner-up Tommy Skipper won with his first and final clearance of the day at 18-0 1/2 (5.50m). The Sandy, Ore., native next tried three attempts at a new school and conference record of 19-1 (5.82 m), but missed all three. He entered the weekend ranked first among collegians nationally with a season best and NCAA automatic mark (18-6 3/4), and ranked ahead of UCLA's Yoo Kim (18-4 3/4) nationally.
Also in the pole vault Saturday, Duck redshirt junior Jon Derby hiked his indoor pole vault best by 9 1/4 inches (second, 17-6 1/2) and easily met the NCAA provisional mark of 17-0 3/4 . The North Bend, Ore., native entered the weekend with a prior best of 16-9 1/4 from Seattle's Husky Classic in mid-February, and now will have to wait until late Monday afternoon to see if he will join Skipper in Fayetteville, Ark., next for weekend for the NCAA Championships, Fri.-Sat., March 11-12.
Individual NCAA event fields normally feature 12-17 entrants, and last year's NCAA indoor pole vault field included 16 entrants. Heading into this weekend, only 12 vaulters had gone higher than Derby so far in' 05, and two others also owned the same exact season best.
On the track, redshirt senior Eric Logsdon added an NCAA mark in his third different distance event this campaign, this time with a two-second school record in the mile (fourth, 4:01.86). The Canby, Ore., native met the NCAA provisional standard of 4:04.90 and lowered his previous season best (4:05.82) by almost four seconds.
On this week's national qualifying lists, 19 athletes had run faster than Logsdon Saturday, including nine that had broken the magical 4:00 barrier, while Logsdon already ranked top-10 nationally in the 3,000 (ninth, 7:54.29) and 5,000 (eighth, 13:49.99) with NCAA automatic marks in each.
On the school's indoor all-time lists, Logsdon moved ahead of former teammate Noel Paulson in the mile (4:04.31, 2002) , and his other season bests already ranked first in the 5,000 (13:49.99) and second in the 3,000 (7:54.29) only .03 seconds shy of former All-American Steve Fein (7:54.26, 1999).
Logsdon will look forward to his first NCAA trip on the indoor circuit next weekend and is already a two-time All-American in the NCAA 5,000 outdoors (7th-2004, 8th-2003) and twice honored in cross country (41st-2002, 29th-2003).
Other men's distance runners that competed Saturday included seniors Brett Holts (5,000, eighth, 14:38.55) and Nick Dalton (mile, 11th, 4:15.78), and freshmen Kyle Alcorn (3,000, eighth, 8:15.81) and Patrick Werhane (5,000, 17th, 15:09.19).
Senior Sofie Abildtrup paced the women with a runner-up finish in the 400 (54.79) that was .39 seconds shy of the NCAA provisional mark (54.40), and only .03 seconds off her indoor school record from a last chance meet at Florida in 2004.
The Herning, Denmark native came back to anchor the 4x400 relay of freshman Julie Schmidt-Scherer, senior Michelle Donovan and freshman Kasey Harwood (first, 3:46.50) which ran solo to try and better the team's season best and school record of 3:44.74 from last weekend in Seattle.
In other Duck women's results from Seattle, sophomore Emily Enders posted a 1 1/2-inch season best and tied her indoor personal best in the pole vault (fourth, 12-5 1/2), and Harwood placed fourth in the 800 (2:13.92).

For those unfamiliar with the NCAA indoor qualifying system, athletes qualify for the collegiate finale based on their indoor season bests. The NCAA championships committee designates an automatic qualifying mark that if athletes attain in 2005 automatically qualifies them for the NCAA Championships, Fri.-Sat., March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Since most individual event fields (normally 12-17 for individual events, 11-13 for relays) will not fill with automatic qualifiers, a second NCAA provisional mark is used to add the top remaining marks from this season. Both NCAA men's and women's fields feature 270 entrants.
Two Duck men led this week's national collegiate lists with NCAA automatic marks ? senior long jumper Leonidas Watson (25-11) and sophomore pole vaulter Tommy Skipper (18-6 3/4). Junior Matt Scherer joined the automatic list Saturday at Iowa State with a school record in the 400 (45.95), and added another school record and NCAA automatic mark in his anchor on the 4x400 (3:04.17). Junior Eric Mitchum is a virtual lock to make his second NCAA appearance in the 60 hurdles with his NCAA provisional time (7.74) that ranked him fifth nationally last weekend.
Other Ducks with various chances of qualifying with their current season bests and NCAA provisional marks include junior decathlete Ryan Voge (heptathlon, ninth, 5,445), redshirt senior Laura Harmon (5,000, 15th, 16:18.56) and the women's distance medley of redshirt junior Sara Schaaf, senior Sofie Abildtrup, freshman Kasey Harwood and Harmon (11th, 11:27.77).
