
No. 3 Tar Heels Top Ducks 21-8 in Lacrosse

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The No. 3 North Carolina women's lacrosse team recorded five hat tricks and goals from 10 players on its way to posting its highest-scoring game of the season in a 21-8 victory over Oregon Friday at Fetzer Field.
Jess Allen led the Tar Heels with four goals as the team improved its record to 9-2. Oregon, in its inaugural year of women's lacrosse, is 2-9.
Carolina dominated the game from the outset, netting a goal in the first 29 seconds of play and tallying the first four goals before Oregon made a shot. With 15:46 left in the half, the Tar Heels were up 9-1, but Oregon went on a 5-2 run to finish the half with a score of 11-6.
Carolina reclaimed its defense in the second half, holding Oregon scoreless for 25 minutes. The Ducks' Lindsay Pittard posted a goal with 5:03 left in the game but Carolina had already scored eight times to bring the running score to 19-7. Oregon's Kate Fleming netted her third goal in the final two minutes of the game. Chrissy Rude had just put away her third point with three minutes left, and Kelly Renzi accidentally scored while trying to pass to the middle with 12 seconds to play.
Jen May scored two more goals to increase her team-leading total to 25. Theresa Waldron scored the Ducks' first goal of the game while Lindsay Killian also scored once. Emily Fowler and Erin Gaebe each recorded assists for Oregon.
Rude was one of five Tar Heels who had earned a hat trick by the final whistle. Allison Higgins, Christina Juras and Renzi all had three goals, while Allen scored four. Allen, Higgins, Renzi, Rude, Meg Freshwater and Stephanie Scurachio all had assists. Cook, Freshwater and Scurachio also scored a goal apiece, as did Erica LaGrow and Nicki Barnes-Wagner.
Oregon finishes its road swing with a game Saturday against Davidson at 11 a.m. PST.
