16th Hole Derails Ducks at ASU
04/02/05 | Women's Golf
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Oregon struggled to a round of 19 stokes over par -- seven of those coming on the treacherous par-3 16th hole alone -- and slid to a tie for seventh Saturday at the Ping/ASU Invitational. Despite the rough day, the Ducks are still in position for their best finish at Karsten since 1998.
Senior Johnna Nealy was the only UO golfer to make it unscathed through No. 16, a 153-yard shot to a small, elevated green with a steep drop off in every direction and a deep pot bunker to boot. Nealy, from Grants Pass, Ore., was 1-over on Saturday and was tied for 10th at 2-over 146, finishing her round with a birdie on No. 18 to go along with the one she recorded on No. 13
No. 16 wasn't as kind to the rest of the Ducks. Junior Erin Andrews was enjoying a 2-under round that featured four birdies until she triple-bogeyed the 16th to finish 1-over for the day and tied for 14th-overall at 3-over 147. Sophomore Kim McCready and freshman Victoria Wenslow both double-bogeyed No. 16. Wenslow carded an 80 on Saturday and was tied for 47th at 154, while McCready's 81 left her tied for 51st at 155.
Second-ranked UCLA shot a 1-under 287 and led the field at 578. No. 7 Arizona State followed at 582, with No. 5 Pepperdine and California tied for third at 593. No. 8 Washington was fifth at 598 and No. 18 USC was sixth at 599.
Oregon and No. 12 New Mexico were tied for seventh at 602. No. 19 Arizona was a stoke back in ninth at 603. No. 20 Stanford was 10th at 605, followed by Texas Christian at 606, No. 24 Tulsa at 607 and No. 22 Texas at 610.
The Ducks haven't finished higher than 11th at Karsten since placing fifth in 1998.
Louise Stahle of Arizona State led the individual race at 6-under 138 after shooting a 68 Saturday. UCLA's Susie Mathews was next at 140.
The final round will be played Sunday.
