Men's Tennis Ends Losing Skid, Defeats Arizona, 5-2

EUGENE ? It was a banner day for the University of Oregon men's tennis team as it defeated Arizona, 5-2, Saturday at the Student Tennis Center, snapping an 11-match losing streak. The Ducks (8-14, 1-5) grabbed the doubles point and then dominated singles play, winning four of six matches.
Oregon managed to earn the doubles point for the first time since Texas Tech (2/26) by winning two of three matches. At No. 1, playing for only the second time all season together, Markus Schiller and Vlad Pino defeated UA's No. 19-ranked Roger Matalonga and Colin O'Grady, 8-6.
With the score tied 7-7 and Arizona serving, up 40-15, Arron Spencer and Sven Swinnen rallied back to win their team-high eighth dual of the season, defeating Daniel Andrus and Paul Warkentin, 9-7.
Oregon showcased its best singles play of the season, winning at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. No. 14 Swinnen defeated Arizona's No. 55 Matalonga, 6-2, 6-2, to improve to 23-6 overall and 16-3 in dual play. Swinnen has defeated nine ranked players this season.
Spencer (Sheldon HS) improved to 9-8 in dual play with an easy 6-3, 6-3 win over UA's Bruno Alcala at No. 5.
Thomas Bieri then clinched the match for the Ducks, defeating the Wildcats' Andrus, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3.
Manuel Kost got back to the .500 mark (11-11 overall) with a straight set victory over Warkentin at No. 4.
The Ducks are now 2-8 lifetime against the Wildcats.
Oregon closes out the regular season next weekend when it takes on No. 12 Washington, Saturday, at 1:30 p.m., at the Student Tennis Center.
