Nealy Struggles in Rough Weather at Sunriver
05/18/05 | Women's Golf
SUNRIVER, Ore. ? Rough weather conditions during Wednesday's second round of the NCAA Championships produced an even rougher day of golf for Oregon's Johnna Nealy. Playing in the last pairing of the afternoon, which meant she faced the worst of the deteriorating weather conditions at the 6,312-yard, par-71 Meadows Course, Nealy shot a 10-over 81 that left her tied for 94th overall at 157.
"It was extremely rough out there for everyone," said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard. "The wind and rain made an already difficult course play much longer."
The senior from Grants Pass, Ore., opened with five straight bogeys and finished with nine. She also marked down a double-bogey on No. 10 and seven pars. The day ended on a positive note when she birdied the par-5 17th. The weather-aided 81 represented Nealy's highest round in more than a year. She shot an 82 at the 2004 Pac-10 championships.
"Johnna played hard and battled to the end even though her score was kind of high," Rouillard said. "There were a lot of high numbers today. The good thing is she has two more rounds to show how good she can play."
The weather had a negative effect on the team scores as well. Playing during the morning's relatively benign conditions, Pepperdine fired the low round of the day, an 11-over 295, to grab a share of the lead halfway through the tournament with Auburn at 586. The Tigers shot a 296 Wednesday. Defending champion UCLA was third at 590, while California was fourth at 594. It was no coincidence that the top seven teams following Wednesday's action played during the morning round.
Eileen Vargas' 1-under 70 helped pace Pepperdine's charge to the front. Vargas is one of four individuals tied for the individual lead at 2-over 144. That group also includes Charlotte Mayorkas of UCLA, Diana Ramage of Auburn and Dewi Schreefel of USC.
First day leader USC struggled with a 28-over 312 and fell to seventh place at 599.
Weather permitting, the third of four scheduled rounds will be played Thursday.
