
LaVoie Shoots Second Consecutive 72 at NCAA Golf Championships

OWINGS MILLS, Md. ? Oregon's Gregg LaVoie shot a 2-over 72 for the second consecutive round and moved up 12 spots to a tie for 37th at 4-over 144 following Thursday's action at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, played at the par-70, 7,131-yard Caves Valley Golf Club.
LaVoie recorded three birdies, three bogeys and a costly double bogey on No. 16. The junior from Pasco, Wash., also birdied No. 7, No. 13 and No. 17, and bogeyed the fifth, ninth and 12th holes. He started the day tied for 49th.
With a 54-hole cut looming following Friday's third round, LaVoie probably needs to move into the top 20 to advance. The first 15 teams and an additional six individuals will move on to Saturday's final round. Based on the 36-hole standings, the individual cut would have been at those players tied for 18th at 1-over 141.
Pepperdine's Michael Putnam shot his second straight 3-under 67 to claim the individual lead at 6-under 134. First day co-leader Major Manning of Augusta State had an even par 70 Thursday and was a shot back of Putnam at 135. Roberto Castro of Georgia Tech and James Lepp of Washington were tied for third at 137.
Georgia shot a 4-over 284 and continued to lead the competition with a two-day total of 2-under 558. Tennessee was second at 567, Georgia Tech moved to third at 569 and USC was fourth at 572.
