EUGENE, Ore. ? The Oregon men's tennis team opened their spring season with a decisive 6-1 victory Friday morning over Idaho.
The Ducks rolled through the three doubles matches as Markus Schiller and Arron Spencer defeated John Hieb and Timothy Huynh, 8-3. Thomas Bieri and Fernando Freitas defeated Anthony Karlovic and Ned Hayley, 8-5. Mike Myrhed and Gustavo Loza dropped Uriah Jones and Paulo Miranda, 8-2 to close out the doubles sweep.
The Ducks nearly swept the singles points as well. Markus Schiller opened the scoring with a 45 minute two set sweep of Huynh, 6-1, 6-1. Myrhed kept the Ducks on the positive side as he also rolled in his match a 6-2, 6-1 thumping of Miranda.
Thomas Bieri was another straight sets winner for the Ducks as he defeated Idaho's Hieb 6-2, 6-3. Eric Pickard wrapped up the Ducks straight sets victories as he defeated Hayley, 6-3, 6-1.
The final two singles matches were extended matches. Freitas fell in a tough third set tiebreak, 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 7-10. Arron Spencer fought through a 4-1 deficit in the second set to bring it back to 6-6 before he won the tiebreak 7-0.
The Ducks return to action at 3 p.m. today when they face Santa Clara at the Student Tennis Center.
