Rupp & Buchanan Pace Harriers in Clackamas

PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Oregon men's and women's cross country teams coasted to wins Saturday morning in the Mike Hodges Invitational, hosted by Clackamas Community College in southeast Portland.
The Oregon men won the university race with a perfect score of 15 points, and were followed by Washington (second, 67) and Portland (third, 116), while the Duck women totalled 24 points to edge the Huskies (second, 76).
Duck sophomore Galen Rupp cruised to an 18-second win in the 4-mile men's race (18:40) over a pair of teammates - redshirt sophomore Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott (second, 18:58) and redshirt junior Carlos Trujillo (third, 18:58). Rupp and Kiptoo-Biwott built up a four-second lead after a 4:40 first mile, before Rupp edged ahead near the midway point and remembered second- and third-mile splits of 9:20 and 14:10, followed by a last mile in the 4:30s.
“The goal for Shadrack and I was to go out harder to get used to how it will feel at Pac-10s,” Rupp said, “and from there the other guys would key off us. We were a couple seconds fast at the first mile, but it still worked out well, and as a team we executed really well. It was good that we learned how to run with particular groups of teammates. For myself, I felt relaxed the whole way, and was able to close hard at the end, so I was happy with my effort. I don't have a lot of collegiate cross country racing experience, so it was good to get another race under my belt and get back into the race routine. The course was flat and honest, although there were a lot of turns that broke up your rhythm, including a couple 90-degree and even an 180-degree turn.”
Individually, the Ducks swept the first 12 places overall – a group that included freshmen Kenny Klotz (fourth, 19:08) and Diego Mercado (fifth, 19:08), unattached entrant Andrew Acosta (sixth, 19:17), junior Chris Winter (seventh, 19:18), senior Patrick Werhane (eighth, 19:19), unattached entrants Diego Mercado (ninth, 19:22) and Eric Dettman (10th, 19:35), sophomore Duke Wasteney (11th, 19:37) and redshirt junior Esteban Trujillo (12th, 19:41).
Other Duck men's entries included juniors Vertin Alvarez (17th, 19:50), Michael McGrath (18th, 19:52) and James Withers (19th, 19:56), unattached entrants Kevin McNally (26th, 20:06) and Matt Dettman (27th, 20:09), redshirt freshman Keith Laverty (29th, 20:10), and unattached entrants David Bondi (37th, 20:22), Vincent D'Onofrio (38th, 20:22), Ken Scoggin (39th, 20:23), Mat Cravens (40th, 20:23), Zach Done (49th, 20:35) and Cameron Carter (56th, 21:09).
Afterwards in the women's 5,000-meter race, Duck senior Dana Buchanan and sophomore Zoe Nelson took second (16:47) and third (16:49), respectively. Willamette's Sarah Zerzan escaped from the field after the halfway point to win by 22 seconds (16:25).
Unattached Oregon entrant Rebekah Noble followed in fourth place (17:00), and other Duck entries included junior Sarah Pearson (sixth, 17:07), freshman Lauren Zaludek (ninth, 17:26), redshirt junior Liisa Heinonen (10th, 17:30) and redshirt freshman Berkeley Aldinger-Gibson (15th, 18:06).
Buchanan, Nelson and Pearson moved into the lead after the first kilometer, and then continued to lead at the second kilometer while Pearson dropped back. Willamette's Zerzan took the lead soon after the halfway point thanks to a hard surge, and maintained the same advantage through the last mile of the race. Buchanan dropped behind Nelson a little early in the fifth kilometer, than surged the final quarter-mile to lead the Ducks at the finish line.
“The weather was cool, and the course was really fast, and pretty fun,” Buchanan said. “Even though it was a little short, I still ran the equivalent of a 17:15 5K, which would be a 30-second personal best. I had a more conservative start and better middle part of the race compared to last year when I would go out too hard and die some in the middle. All our girls ran really well, including Rebekah and Amanda who had especially good races. As a team, coach wanted us to experiment with running in different groups for the first two miles, and then go from there, so that was a good experience for Pac-10s.”
Looking ahead, the Ducks are scheduled to compete next in the Beaver Cross Country Classic, Sat., Oct. 21, hosted by Oregon State University at Avery Park in Corvallis, Ore. The women's 6,000-meter race begins at 9:45 a.m., and the men's 8,000-meter contest follows at 10:45 a.m. More meet info will be available at OSU's www.orst.edu/groups/running Recreational Sports Department website.
The following weekend, the Duck men and women open the championship season in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, Sat., Oct. 28, hosted by Stanford University on the Stanford Golf Course. The NCAA West Regional Championships follow two weeks later on Sat., Nov. 11, and return to Blue Lake Park in Portland, Ore.
