Maloney Takes 2nd in USA Junior Women's Hammer

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? University of Oregon freshmen Megan and Matthew Maloney opened action first-day action with top-five finishes Wednesday in the Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the IUPUI campus.
Megan Maloney finished second in the junior women's hammer (170-2) behind Emily Bernhardt of the Throw 1 Deep Track Club (first, 172-2).
Since she finished top-two in her event, Maloney is now eligible to compete in the 2006 World Junior Championships, August 15-20 in Beijing, China.
Maloney opened with a throw of 169-4 (51.63m), then logged a 166-10 (50.88m) second throw, and fouled her third attempt of the prelims. In the event finals, she added marks of 170-2 (51.87m) and 161-8 (49.29m) on her fourth and fifth attempts, and fouled her sixth try.
The Barrington, R.I. native entered the meet with a season and personal best of 181-2 from the Oregon Invitational that ranked her seventh all-time for UO and 11th on the 2006 NCAA list among freshmen. Overall during the year, she topped her preseason best (169-10) in six of her last seven meets of the season.
Her twin brother Matthew Maloney added fifth place Wednesday in the junior men's javelin (200-1) and was only 5 feet, 3 inches off the runner-up Christopher Hill (205-4), while North Carolina's Adam Montague won the competition (222-8).
Maloney opened with a throw of 198-7 (60.53m), then fouled his second, third and fourth attempts, while his fifth and sixth throwers were 200-1 (60.99m) and 199-0 (60.66m).
During the season, Maloney led the Ducks with his season best (224-11) from the Oregon Invitational that moved him to seventh all-time for the Oregon. That same mark ranked him 16th overall among collegians and second among freshmen and on the NCAA list in late-May. During the championship season, he added third place in the West Regional (222-5) to earn an NCAA invite, and two weeks later he placed 18th in the NCAA Championships prelims (207-6).
Both Ducks also competed in the 2005 USA Junior Championships as Megan Maloney placed 10th in the junior women's hammer (153-2) and Matthew Maloney finished sixth in the junior men's javelin (205-0).
In other junior event action, Duck signee and prep senior Diego Mercado of West Covina, Calif., won the 10,000 meters (31:36.35) by 4.32 seconds over Florida's Jeremy Criscione (second, 31:40.67). Another Duck teammate to be - Crater High School product Central Point, Ore., native Isaac Stoutenburgh - followed in 12th place (34:07.12).
Looking ahead, three Duck freshmen will compete in second day action Thursday in the junior championships ? freshman Ashley McCrea (javelin final), Rebekah Noble (800 meters prelims) and Jared Huske (110-meter hurdles prelims & semifinal).
UO senior Matt Scherer will also compete Thursday in the 400 meters prelims of the senior event in the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
