PORTLAND ? The University of Oregon cross country teams opened their season Friday with sweeps of the men's and women's team and individual races in the Pier Park Preview, hosted by the University of Portland at Pier Park in northwest Portland.
The Oregon men team won the team race over the Portland ?B' squad, 26-29, and beat Portland State, 15-50, in the dual-scored competitions, while Portland's ?B' team beat PSU, 15-50.
The UO women also beat the Portland ?C' team, 15-50, and Portland State, 18-41, while Portland State won their women's match-up with Portland, 19-38.
On the women's side, UO freshman Keara Sammons won the 5,000-meter race by seven seconds (17:49.25) over sophomore teammate Zoe Nelson (second, 17:56.57) and Willamette's Sarah Zerzan (third, 18:24.28).
“It was great having Zoe out there to run with,” Sammons said. “Her expertise made me less nervous. Coach told us to go out in the top two and stay together and then go harder at the end. The course was nice, and had some rolling hills.”
Junior Sarah Pearson followed in fourth place overall (18:37.00), and other UO scorers included freshman Lauren Zaludek (sixth, 18:58.71), junior Liisa Heinonen (ninth, 19:17.78). Other UO finishers included freshmen Berkeley Aldinger-Gibson (11th, 19:19.20) and Amanda Stopa (12th, 19:26.54).
In his debut for the Duck men, redshirt sophomore transfer Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott won the four-mile men's race by four seconds (19:46.86) over Portland's Colin Longmuir (second, 19:50.65) and Justin Houck (third, 19:55.75).
The Albuquerque, N.M. product Kiptoo-Biwott ran with the Duck front five through the first three miles, then surged ahead the final mile and comfortably built up a 30-meter lead on the field.
“I've been waiting to put on an Oregon uniform for a while so it was nice to finally get a chance to race and have it count,” Kiptoo-Biwott said. “I felt good today and tried to do my best to help the team out. We've had a great week training together, so it was nice to get out there and race together, too.”
With a front five separated by only 15 seconds, the Duck men's team placed four more runners in the top 10 thanks to freshman Kenny Klotz (fourth, 19:59.70), graduate student Ben Stern (sixth, 20:03.17), junior Chris Winter (seventh, 20:04.17) and sophomore Duke Wasteney (eighth, 20:08.12).
Other Duck finishers included sophomore Scott Wall (11th, 20:33.57), juniors Vertin Alvarez (12th, 20:36.53) and James Withers (14th, 20:46.01), senior Blake Flanders (29th, 21:20.28) and redshirt freshman Stephen Oliver (42nd, 21:48.29).
Looking ahead, the UO cross country teams will return to Bend for the remainder of their fall training camp. Their next competition will be the Bill Dellinger Invitational, scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 29 at Alton Baker Park in Eugene ? their first home cross country event since 1998.
