Ducks Cruise, Sweep Linfield to Open Season
01/20/07 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE -- It was a day of breadsticks and bagels as the University of Oregon men's tennis team swept Linfield 7-0 Saturday at the Student Tennis Center. In only two matches did the Wildcats move into crooked numbers as they totaled only 15 total game wins on the day.
With lots of zeros and ones on the scoreboard for the Wildcats it was easy to see that the Ducks controlled the pace of the match throughout, with three of Oregon's starting six ending their matches in under 45 minutes.
"It was great to get our guys out there to start the season and I thought we played very well," director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. "It was good to give the freshman a chance to see what a collegiate match is like and put that uniform on for the first time."
Ric Mortera was the first Duck to get on the scoreboard in singles, dispatching Cole Shelton, 6-1, 6-0, but Alexander Cornelissen was quick to follow with a 6-0, 6-1 victory of his own over Ian McGrath.
"It was great stepping stone for our season," Mortera said. "I though that I played pretty well, but it is a long season and we have to be prepared for the road ahead."
Not to be outdone by the freshmen newcomers, senior Eric Pickard finished off his opponent less than a minute after Cornelissen dispatched his. The Portland, Ore. native defeated Luke Rembold 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Geoff Embry was the last Duck off the court, but he also picked up the 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The only Ducks to allow their opponents to win more than one game were Francisco Gallardo and Mikeal Myrhed, but they both won as convincingly as their peers, with Myrhed picking up the 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nick Ruess and Gallardo defeating Wesley Gabrielsen 6-1, 6-2.
The Ducks also picked up the doubles point as Mortera and Stephen Wiechert led the way with an 8-0 win over Jed Rembold and Tal Edman.
