Pac-10 Wins by a Point as Ducks Finish Fourth at Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge

TACOMA, Wash. ? The Pac-10 held on to defeat the Big Ten by a single point in match play, 30 1/2 to 29 1/2, as the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge wrapped up Monday afternoon.
Derek Sipe shot a 73 to lead Oregon to a fourth-place finish, the Ducks' fourth top four showing in as many tournaments this fall.
UCLA withstood a charge from Michigan State to defend its Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge title by six stokes. The Bruins covered the 7,471-yard, par-72 Chambers Bay golf course in 15-over 879, while the Spartans were at 885. Northwestern took third at 891.
The Ducks other than Sipe struggled on Monday, but Oregon still held on for fourth at 892. Sipe finished the tournament tied for eighth at 5-over 221. Also for the Ducks, freshman Jack Dukeminier tied for 10th at 222 and freshman Isaiah Telles tied for 13th at 224.
Minnesota was fifth at 896, followed by Washington (898), Oregon State (907) and Wisconsin (922) to round out the field.
Randy Brehm of Michigan State fired the low round of the day, a 5-under 67, coming from four shots back to win medalist honors at 6-under 210. Bruins held down the next three places with Kevin Chappell second at 215 and Craig Leslie and Erik Flores tied for third at 216.
Regulation scoring was kept for team and individual tournament standings, while the conference challenge winner was decided by 60 match play pairings. The Pac-10 now leads the all-time conference challenge series 3-1.
The newly launched Big Ten Network will provide tournament coverage and air a recap show on a tape-delayed basis. Air times are 4 p.m. on Nov. 4 (debut), 11 a.m. on Nov. 6 (repeat) and 10 a.m. on Nov. 9 (repeat).
Oregon wraps up the fall with the Food 4 Less Pacific Invitational Nov. 5-7 in Stockton, Calif.
