Ducks Post Fifth Straight Top-Four Finish
11/08/07 | Men's Golf
STOCKTON, Calif. ? Seniors Derek Sipe and Joey Benedetti shot 4-under 68s Wednesday to help Oregon wrap up the fall season with its fifth straight top four finish.
This year, the Ducks tied for third at the OSU Giustina Memorial, took fourth at the Husky Invitational, tied for fourth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and placed fourth at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge before shooting their third straight 9-under 279 Wednesday to finish fourth at the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational.
"Overall, we had a pretty good fall season," said Oregon coach Casey Martin. "I think we could have finished a little better in a couple of events and finishing strong is certainly something we can work on this spring, but at the same time, I was very pleased with our consistency. We didn't allow ourselves to have any major collapses and saw our confidence grow as the fall progressed."
At Pacific, the two seniors led three Ducks into the top 15.
Freshman Sean Maekawa held on to tie for ninth at 10-under 206 after carding a 70 on Wednesday. Benedetti and Sipe charged into the top 15 with their low rounds of the tournament. Benedetti, from Huntington Beach, Calif., tied for 11th at 9-under 207, while Sipe tied for 15th at 7-under 209. Freshman Jack Dukeminier tied for 37th at level par 216.
"We found out we have five pretty good golfers and three freshmen who can play," said Martin. "Our seniors came on in the last couple of events and played like we expect them to and if that carries over into the spring, we have a chance to be a pretty decent team that can compete in the Pac-10."
Charlotte shot a 17-under 271 Wednesday at the par-72, 6,777-yard Brookside Country Club to come from six strokes back to steal the Pacific Invitational team title from Kansas State. The Wildcats carded a 279, but fell two strokes short of Charlotte, 824-826.
Marquette fired a 13-under 275 to edge the Ducks by a stroke for third. Marquette finished at 836, while Oregon checked in at 27-under 837.
Charlotte's Stefan Wiedergruen fired a 66 to win individual medalist honors at 17-under 199, three strokes better than Grant Doverspike of Fresno State.
