EUGENE - Geoff Embry showed the reason why he was moved up in the lineup for the Ducks as he clinched the 5-2 victory in a dual match versus UC Santa Barbara played Sunday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
Playing at the No. 4 position for the first time, Embry rallied from 1-5 down in his first set to take it in a tiebreak, 7-6(4) and then the freshman would clinch the match for the Ducks with his impressive 7-6(4), 6-2 victory. With the victory, he moves to 7-0 on the year in dual matches.
"There was unbelievable energy heading into the singles matches, even though we had lost the doubles point," director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. "We were able to use that intensity and responded to some early adversity to get a really good win."
The Ducks would capture five of the six singles matches for the victory. With the win, the Ducks move to 6-2 on the year.
Francisco Gallardo also rallied in his first set, from down 5-4, to take it 7-5. The freshman would take the three game first set run and extend it into a perfect second set to win the match, 7-5, 6-0.
Senior Eric Pickard had the easiest run of the afternoon for the Ducks, defeating Nigel Barton 6-3, 6-2.
Mike Myrhed was the second Duck off the court after posting a 6-2, 6-4 win over Grant Robertson at the No. 5 position.
Even though the Ducks had clinched the match, freshman Alex Cornelissen had begun his third set and was forced to finish the match. He would be equal to the task however, breaking early in the set and holding on for the 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory.
The Ducks dropped the doubles point as only the pair of Embry and Cornellisen would win 8-5.
Oregon takes the road for the first time next week as they will not return to the friendly confines of their home court until March 17 when they face Eastern Washington.
