Ducks Whip the Wildcats, 14-1

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Kate Fleming had five goals and Ilsa van den Berg added two goals as the No. 20 Duck women's lacrosse team rolled to a 14-1 victory over the Davidson Wildcats in a non-conference match played Sunday afternoon. Coming off a tough loss to the No. 1 University of North Carolina, the Ducks needed to make a statement and they would in a big way.
In less than ideal conditions that included freezing temperatures and rain, the Ducks ran off 13 straight goals after Davidson tied the score at 1-1, three minutes into the first half.
Sophomore Casey Rector and freshman Jenna Barnes also added two goals each for the Ducks. Rector also had an assist, giving her three points on the day, third on the team behind Fleming's five and van den Berg's four.
Oregon outshot Davidson by a tremendous margin of 31-6, taking 10 more shots in the first half than the Wildcats and 15 more in the second. The Ducks put 23 of their 31 shots on goal, forcing Davidson's starting goalkeeper, Laura Johnson, to make eight saves. The Ducks did not ease off the pressure when Johnson was replaced with nine minutes remaining, putting three goals past the reserve, Michelle Pav.
The lack of shots from the Wildcats meant Oregon's goalkeepers were rarely tested. Starter Anna Poponyak made both of the Ducks saves on the afternoon, allowing the one Davidson goal while freshman Sam Debow was not forced to make a save in her 14:09 of action.
Junior Jen May tallied only a single goal for the Ducks, but led the team with three caused turnovers.
Oregon only had 12 turnovers on the day, compared to Davidson's 21.
The Ducks will return to the east coast next weekend, as they face Georgetown on Friday and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) on Sunday.
