Ducks Sting Sacramento State, 5-2

EUGENE -- Freshman Geoff Embry remained undefeated as the Ducks defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 5-2 in a dual meet Saturday night at the Student Tennis Center. With the win, the Ducks move to 5-1 on the year while the Hornets drop to 0-1 in the young season.
"The guys played great tonight against a very good team," director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. "This was a good measuring stick of where we are at as a team so far."
Embry, the Phoenix, Arizona native continued his dominant start, losing only three games in a 6-1, 6-2 match against Miguel Camino. The freshman has only allowed one opponent this year to take four games in a set.
The bottom half of the lineup as a whole was again strong for the Ducks as Embry picked up the win at the No. 5 position, sophomore Mike Myrhed got the 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Warwick Foy at the No. 4 position and senior Eric Pickard defeated Haque Van Dillen in the No. 6 position, 6-3, 6-3.
Alexander Cornelissen, the touted freshman from Belgium, was the only Duck in the top half to pick up a victory, rallying from an early set loss to defeat Gabo Lorado 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Ducks gave themselves the cushion of the doubles point to open the evening by winning at the top two positions as Embry and Cornelissen rolled Stryhas and Barjas-Smith, 8-5 and Marcos Verdasco and Francisco Gallardo picked up the hard-fought 8-6 victory. Stephen Wiechert and Myrhed dropped their doubles match against Ramon Perez and Foy, 8-4.
The Ducks return to action as they host Brigham Young on Wed., Feb. 7.
