EUGENE, Ore.-The Oregon women's tennis team opened the 2008 season with a tough loss Friday to Utah, 2-5 at the Student Tennis Center.
Utah defeated Oregon in the doubles point, as the conbination of Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok defeated Celine Roly and Ana Cecilia Olivos, 6-8. Ferris and Kwok started off hot and were up 5-2; however, the Ducks rallied back and tied it at 6-6. But it was a little too late in the end. Siobhan Cavan and Anna Powaska won their match against Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan, 8-2.
In singles play, Stephanie McFarlane dominated with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Andrea Maughan. Anna Powaska also came up victorious in a hard fough match til the end against Leigh Walsh winning 7-5, 7-5.
At the No. 1 slot Celine Rolly lost to Elizabeth Ferris 2-6, 6-4, 1-6. Rolly showed a lot of grit in coming back taking the second set 6-4, and shows the competetive drive to play at the No. 1 spot in the Pac-10. In the longest match of the Siobhan Cavan lost to Karine Bourdages 6-3, 6-7, 5-7. Cavan looked as if she had control of the match when leading 4-2 in the second match, however, Bourdages came up with the crucial points in the end.
The women's will be playing at home against Cal Poly Sunday at 10 a.m.
